Chapter 1 - The Blood Pact in the Back Alley

He looked into her eyes and told her: "If she dies, you die. If she lives, the city belongs to you."Adrian didn’t care about the grease on Nora’s apron or the fear rolling off her in waves. His focus was entirely on Lena, his seventeen-year-old sister, whose life was slipping away on a dirty linoleum floor.
"Get your car," Adrian commanded, his voice a low, vibrating growl that shook Nora to her core.
"I—I don't have a car," Nora stammered, her hands still slick with Lena's blood. "I take the night bus."
Adrian cursed, a dark, foreign word that sounded like a death sentence. He swept Lena into his arms as if she weighed nothing, despite the heavy, blood-soaked designer coat. "Then you're coming with me. If you stop pressing that wound, she bleeds out before we hit the expressway. Move!"
Nora didn’t have time to think about her shifts, her tyrannical manager, or the fact that she was stepping into a blacked-out SUV belonging to Chicago’s most feared underworld figure. She climbed into the backseat, instantly pulling Lena’s head into her lap, her fingers digging back into the sticky tear in the girl's side.
The SUV tore away from the curb just as the diner’s back door flew open. Mr. Dimas, Nora’s manager, stood there with a flashlight, but he was too late. They were already melting into the freezing February sleet.
"Who did this to her?" Nora whispered, her voice trembling as the car drifted dangerously around a tight corner.
Adrian looked at her through the rearview mirror. His eyes were completely black, devoid of any warmth. "People who think they can buy this city from me. People who are going to burn for touching her."
He threw a burner phone into the back seat. "Look at the screen. Did she say anything else before I arrived?"
Nora picked up the phone with her one free, trembling hand. There was a text message sent to Lena's phone just an hour prior. It read: The Callahan girl will open the door. Trust no one else.
Nora froze. Her breath caught in her throat. Callahan. That was her last name.
"Why does this text mention me?" Nora gasped, the blood draining from her face. "I don't know your sister! I've never seen her before tonight!"

Adrian’s grip tightened on the steering wheel until his knuckles turned white. "Because, Nora Callahan, you aren't just a waitress. Your late father owed three million dollars to the Volkov Syndicate. They didn't just dump my sister in your diner by accident. They used you as the bait, and now, my enemies think you're the one who set Lena up."
Before Nora could process the horrifying truth, a heavy blinding flash illuminated the night. A massive delivery truck slammed into the side of their SUV, sending them spinning into the dark, icy abyss of the industrial district.
