Chapter 5 - The Pier 42 Bloodbath

They thought she was just an innocent bystander. They didn't know she was the one pulling the pin.The wind at the harbor was vicious, carrying the scent of salt, rust, and impending death. Adrian’s backup vehicle—a heavily armored sedan—idled in the shadows of a massive shipping container overlooking Pier 42.

Through the binoculars, Nora watched the exchange. Dozens of men in heavy coats were unloading crates from a massive cargo ship. In the center of it all stood Yuri Volkov, the ruthless head of the Volkov Syndicate, a man whose name was whispered in fear across the entire Midwest.

"Here's the plan," Adrian said, checking his weapons. His shoulder was bandaged tightly, but he showed no signs of pain. "I'm going in through the catwalks. I need you to stay in this car. If anyone approaches, you use this." He handed her a compact submachine gun.

"Adrian," Nora called out before he could open the door. "Why did my father really owe that money? He was a good man."

Adrian paused, his hand on the door handle. He didn't look back. "Your father didn't lose that money gambling, Nora. He used it to pay for your mother's experimental cancer treatments years ago. The Volkovs rigged the interest rates to keep him under their thumb forever. He died trying to protect you from them."

The truth hit Nora like a physical blow. Her father hadn't been a reckless gambler who ruined their lives; he had sacrificed everything to try and save her mother. A sudden, burning rage ignited deep within her chest, replacing every ounce of fear she had left.

"Don't leave me in the car," Nora said, her voice dropping an octave, completely steady. "Give me the detonator to the auxiliary charges you planted."

Adrian turned around, a slow, dangerous grin spreading across his face. "You really are a Callahan."

Ten minutes later, the docks erupted into pure chaos. Adrian struck from the shadows, dropping guards with terrifying speed and precision. But Yuri Volkov was prepared. A dozen more men poured out from the cargo ship, pinning Adrian behind a stack of steel pallets.

Yuri laughed, his voice booming over the sound of the wind. "Adrian! You came for revenge? Your sister is rotting in a diner basement, and you will die in the freezing mud!"

From the shadows of the crane above, Nora watched Yuri step into the open, completely exposed. She didn't hesitate. She didn't use the gun.

She pressed the button on the detonator.

The entire eastern quadrant of the pier exploded in a massive wall of fire and steel. The shockwave shattered the windows of the cargo ship and threw Yuri’s guards into the freezing waters below. The distraction was all Adrian needed—he lunged from his cover, his blade flashing in the firelight as he cut through the remaining resistance.
