Chapter 1 - THE SECRET BEHIND THE GROOM’S MASKThe church was swallowed whole by an icy, suffocating silence. What had begun as a slight tug on the delicate white lace of Sofia’s dress had descended into a scene of absolute chaos. Guests were standing on their pews, gasping in horror, while the priest frantically clutched his Bible to his chest.

"Get him off her!" screamed Sofia’s mother, her voice trembling with hysteria. "Julian, do something! The animal has lost his mind!"

Julian, the tall, flawlessly dressed groom whose blue eyes had swept Sofia off her feet two years ago, took a heavy step forward. His face was a mask of furious control, but if anyone had looked closely, they would have noticed the violent twitch in his left jaw. He reached down again, his hand balling into a tight fist, attempting to grab Rich by the scruff of his neck.

"Enough, Rich!" Julian snapped, his voice dropping an octave lower than anyone had ever heard it. "Drop it!"

The moment Julian’s hand brushed against the dog’s neck, Rich didn’t just bark—he emitted a desperate, screeching whine that sounded almost human, using his entire 80-pound body to pull Sofia clear out of the aisle. Sofia stumbled back, falling onto her hands and knees on the cold marble floor.

And that was the precise moment the altar collapsed.

A deafening CRACK echoed through the ancient stone hall. Before anyone could process what was happening, the massive, three-ton oak cross hanging directly above the altar snapped from its wrought-iron chains. It crashed down with brutal, pulverizing force, shattering the stone steps exactly where Sofia and Julian had been standing just two seconds prior. Heavy timber split, clouding the front of the church in thick, blinding dust, while shards of marble flew like shrapnel into the first three rows of pews.

Screams tore through the sanctuary. Women shrieked, men ducked for cover, and dust billowed through the air like smoke from a battlefield.

When the dust cleared, Sofia was huddled on the floor, gasping for air, her ears ringing from the impact. Rich was standing over her, his paws resting on her chest, whining softly as he licked the cold sweat from her forehead. Had Rich not dragged her backward by her dress, she would have been crushed beneath three tons of solid oak.

"Sofia! Oh my God, Sofia!" Julian’s voice broke through the haze. He was lying near the broken debris, scrambling to his feet, his pristine tux covered in gray stone dust. He rushed over to her, his face pale as chalk. "Are you okay? Did it hit you?"

"I... I'm fine," Sofia whispered, her voice shaking violently as she wrapped her trembling arms around Rich’s neck. "He saved me... Rich saved my life."

The crowd erupted into stunned murmurs. The dog hadn't gone mad. The dog had felt the structural vibration of the failing ceiling chain before human ears could hear it. He was a hero.

Julian fell to his knees, wrapping his arms around Sofia. "Thank God," he breathed, pressing his forehead against hers. "Thank God you're safe. I don't know what I would do if I lost you."

As Julian pulled her into a tight embrace, Sofia buried her face into his shoulder. But as her cheek pressed against the expensive fabric of his tailored jacket, her hand brushed against his inner breast pocket. Through the thin wool, she felt something hard and bulky—a small, square metallic object that hummed with a subtle, rhythmic vibration.

Sofia blinked, pulling back slightly. Her eyes drifted down to Julian’s wrist, which was exposed where his cuff had rolled up during the commotion.

Her heart skipped a beat.

Beneath the dust, printed clearly in dark ink across the underside of Julian's wrist, was a tattoo she had never seen before: a small, intricate symbol of an hourglass wrapped in barbed wire. Just three weeks ago, while they were at the beach, that skin had been completely clear.

Julian noticed her gaze. In a split second, he violently jerked his sleeve down, his eyes narrowing with a flash of cold, dangerous darkness that sent a chill straight down Sofia’s spine.

"We need to get you out of here," Julian said smoothly, his tone suddenly shifting back to the gentle, loving man she thought she knew. "The wedding is over for today. Let's go home."

Rich let out a low, guttural growl from deep within his chest, his golden eyes locked onto Julian’s wrist.
