Chapter 2 - The Mansion is Missing

When the hunters realize they are the ones locked out in the cold.Patricia pulled her phone from her bag, her fingers trembling as she answered the call from her personal accountant.

"What do you mean, frozen?!" Patricia shrieked, her voice cracking, drawing the attention of several wealthy hotel guests checking in. "That's impossible! We own the Carter Holding Group!"

"Not anymore, Mother," Madison said smoothly, folding her arms.

Eleanor Bennett stepped forward, resting both hands on her cane. "Patricia, did you really think I didn't know about the shell companies you and your son set up over the last three years? Did you really think I didn't notice you siphoning money from Madison’s trust fund to pay off your failing real estate investments in downtown Chicago?"

Ethan took a step back, panic finally penetrating his arrogant facade. "Madison, talk to me. We're a team. We're married! You can't let your grandmother do this to us!"

"Married?" Madison scoffed, a bitter laugh escaping her lips. "Last night you told me I was meant to run a home, not a business. You threatened to throw me out onto the street in the middle of the night because I wouldn't hand you my grandmother's legacy. Where was the 'team' then, Ethan?"

Mr. Vance stepped forward again, handing Ethan a fresh set of papers.

"What is this?" Ethan stammered.

"Those are foreclosure and eviction notices," Mr. Vance replied calmly. "The luxury mansion you and your mother live in? The Bennett Trust purchased the primary mortgage on that property six months ago through an anonymous subsidiary. Due to non-payment and structural fraud committed by Carter Holdings, the trust has accelerated the foreclosure. You have exactly two hours to clear your personal belongings from the property before the locks are changed."

Patricia looked like she was about to faint. The designer jewelry around her neck suddenly felt like a noose. "You can't do this! We have rights! We will sue you for everything you have!"

"With what money, Patricia?" Eleanor asked, her eyes narrowing into cold slits. "Your bank accounts are frozen pending a federal audit for corporate tax evasion—which my legal team happily handed over to the IRS at 8:00 AM this morning."

Ethan looked at Madison, desperation creeping into his eyes. He dropped to one knee right there on the marble floor of the hotel lobby, reaching out to grab her hand. "Madison, please. I love you. I was just stressed last night. My mother pressured me! It was all her idea! Please, don't do this to me."

Patricia gasped, looking down at her son in pure betrayal. "Ethan! How dare you!"

Madison looked down at her husband of three years—the man who had allowed his mother to insult her at every dinner, the man who had treated her like a trophy maid. She felt absolutely nothing.

She pulled her hand away.

The Hook: “Security,” Madison called out, her voice echoing through the grand lobby. Two massive guards stepped forward. “Please escort these trespassers off my property. And if they ever step foot on Michigan Avenue again, have them arrested.”
