Chapter 5 - Trial by Fire

As the Bennett Grand goes up in flames, a hidden player steps out of the shadows.Alarms began to wail throughout the skyscraper. The smell of thick, acrid smoke began to pour through the ventilation shafts. Panic erupted in the streets below as sirens wailed across downtown Chicago.
"What did you do?!" Madison screamed, rushing to the floor-to-ceiling windows. Down below, flames were bursting from the third-floor kitchen and banquet halls.
"If I can't have it, nobody can!" Patricia shrieked as she was dragged into the elevator by the police. "We hired someone to ensure the Bennett legacy burns to the ground tonight!"
The penthouse filled with smoke quickly. The power cut out, plunging the room into darkness, saved only by the eerie red glow of the emergency lights.
"Grandma, we have to go!" Madison shouted, grabbing Eleanor's arm. But Eleanor was staring at the executive boardroom doors.
A figure stepped through the smoke. He wasn't a firefighter. He was wearing a dark trench coat, a gas mask over his face, and he held a heavy steel crowbar. He didn't look at Madison; he walked straight toward the open vault behind the painting.
He wanted the ledger. He wanted the evidence of the thirty-year-old murder.
"Stop!" Madison yelled, grabbing a heavy crystal award from her desk and hurling it at the intruder. It struck his shoulder, causing him to drop the crowbar with a loud clang.
The man ripped off his gas mask, coughing violently in the smoke. When Madison saw his face, her breath caught in her throat.
It wasn't a hired thug.
It was Thomas Vance—their trusted family attorney. The man who had read the deed clause just three days ago.
"Mr. Vance?!" Madison gasped. "Why?"
Vance spat blood onto the floor, a sinister grin appearing on his face. "You think the Carters acted alone thirty years ago? Who do you think falsified the accounting records to cover up Arthur Carter's embezzlement? Who do you think kept Eleanor blind for three decades? I built this empire with them. And I won't let a twenty-seven-year-old girl ruin my retirement!"

He lunged at Madison, his hands reaching for her throat.
The Hook: Before his fingers could touch her, a loud, echoing BANG shattered the room. Vance collapsed to the floor, clutching his leg, screaming in agony. Madison turned around in shock. Standing in the doorway, holding a smoking pearl-handled revolver, was Eleanor Bennett.
