Chapter 6 - The True Birthright

The ashes clear, revealing the ultimate mastermind behind the entire inheritance. One month later.
The Bennett Grand Hotel had suffered extensive damage, but the structural integrity remained intact. Thanks to a massive insurance payout and Madison’s brilliant crisis management, the hotel was completely renovated, grander and more luxurious than ever before.
Patricia Carter and Thomas Vance were facing charges of first-degree arson, corporate fraud, and the reopened investigation into the first-degree murder of Charles Bennett. Ethan Carter, stripped of every dime, was sentenced to five years as an accessory to grand larceny and obstruction of justice.
A grand reopening gala was held at the hotel. Madison stood at the center of the ballroom, surrounded by Chicago’s elite, city officials, and international press. She was no longer the quiet, timid housewife who swallowed humiliation. She was the undisputed Queen of Michigan Avenue.
Eleanor Bennett approached her granddaughter, raising a glass of champagne. "You handled the press beautifully, Chairman Bennett."
Madison smiled, clinking her glass against her grandmother's. "I learned from the best. But Grandma... there's one thing I still don't understand. Why did you wait until my twenty-seventh birthday? Why let me endure three years of marriage to a monster like Ethan?"
Eleanor’s smile turned profoundly gentle, a look of ultimate triumph in her wise eyes.
"Because, Madison, a diamond cannot be formed without immense pressure," Eleanor whispered, looking out over the crowded ballroom. "If I had given you this hotel at twenty-one, the Carters would have swindled it away from you before you knew how to fight. I had to let them show their hand. I had to let them push you to the absolute brink, so you would discover the fire inside yourself."
Madison looked at her reflection in the grand mirrors of the ballroom. She didn't see a victim anymore. She saw a warrior.
"And there is one final surprise," Eleanor smiled, handing Madison a small, gold key. "Check the sub-basement vault. The real one."
Madison excused herself from the gala and took the private elevator down to the lowest level of the hotel. She unlocked a heavy, unmarked door. Inside was a small, pristine office.
On the desk was a document detailing the final disposition of the Carter Holding Group's liquidated assets. Because of the clauses Madison had signed, the entire Carter family fortune hadn't just been destroyed—it had been legally transferred directly to Madison's personal account.
But it was the letter resting on top of the money that made her heart stop. It was dated three years ago, written by Eleanor, addressed to the Chief of Police:
"To whom it may concern, today my granddaughter married Ethan Carter. The trap is now set. In exactly three years, I will hand her the deed, and the Carters will destroy themselves. Monitor them closely."

Madison gasped, a slow, brilliant smile spreading across her face. Her grandmother hadn't just protected her. Eleanor had orchestrated the entire three-year downfall of their enemies from the very beginning.
The Carters never stood a chance. Madison turned the key, locked the past away forever, and walked back up to claim her empire.
