Chapter 5 - Brenda’s Public MeltdownThe courtroom erupted into controlled chaos. Judge Harrison banged her gavel three times, her face stern as granite, demanding silence.

Brenda Vance—dressed head-to-toe in mourning black, even though my father had passed months ago—stood up from the gallery rows, her face twisted in theatrical anguish.

"Your Honor! This is an outrage! That ungrateful girl has torn our family apart! She’s mentally unstable, she self-mutilates, and now she’s conspiring with corrupt lawyers to steal our home!" Brenda shrieked, pointing a manicured finger directly at me.

The courtroom gallery murmured. Phones began sliding out of pockets. In the age of viral social media, a hysterical stepmother screaming in a high-stakes probate hearing was digital gold.

Detective Vance didn't flinch. She stepped into the center aisle holding a portable projector remote.

"Your Honor, with the court's permission, we submit Exhibit L into evidence: a recovered cloud backup from Derek Vance’s personal computer."

The large projector screen behind the judge’s bench flickered to life. Instantly, high-definition audio filled the courtroom. It was a recorded phone conversation between Brenda and Derek, recorded just two hours after my surgery:

Derek’s voice: "She’s starting to ask too many questions about the life insurance payout, Mom. If she talks to a real lawyer, we're finished."

Brenda’s voice: "Then break her spirit. Starve her of her medical supplies until she signs the deed. If she screams, tell the neighbors she’s having a psychotic episode. Nobody believes a girl with health issues anyway."

Brenda’s face turned the color of ash. Her theatrical tears dried up instantly, replaced by sheer, unadulterated terror as she looked around the courtroom and realized every reporter’s camera was flashing right at her face.
