Chapter 8 - The Ghost of the InheritanceWith Derek behind bars and Brenda awaiting trial in a neighboring facility, I finally returned to the family home on Maple Street.

The moving trucks were parked outside, but they weren't bringing things in—they were hauling Brenda’s expensive, ostentatious designer furniture away to pay off the court-ordered restitution fees.

Dr. Amelia Rhodes drove over on a Saturday afternoon to help me unpack my father’s old photo albums from the attic.

"How are you holding up, Madison?" Dr. Rhodes asked, setting a box of childhood pictures onto the newly polished hardwood floor.

"Better than ever," I smiled, tracing my fingers over a framed photo of my father and me fishing by the lake. "I went back to the clinic yesterday to thank your staff properly. I also made a personal donation to your department's fund for domestic abuse survivors."

Dr. Rhodes beamed proudly. "Your father would have been so proud of you, Madison. You didn't just survive; you dismantled an entire empire of abuse."

Suddenly, my phone buzzed on the kitchen counter. It wasn't a news alert or a legal notification. It was an email from the chief executive officer of my late father's engineering firm, requesting my signature for a multi-million-dollar municipal bridge contract.

I was no longer the girl hiding behind a paper gown on an exam table. I was the owner of my own destiny.
