Chapter 9 - The Trial's Final TwistThe courtroom was packed to the gills for the final sentencing hearing. Judge Harrison sat with an expression of grim determination, flipping through thick stacks of financial audits and psychological evaluations.

Brenda Vance looked unrecognizable. Without her makeup, designer clothes, and dye jobs, she looked old, shrunken, and defeated. Next to her, Marcus Thorne sat with a tight, professional grimace, knowing his defense strategy had completely collapsed.

"Brenda Vance, for the crimes of systemic elder abuse, forgery, and conspiracy to commit financial fraud, this court sentences you to twelve years in a federal penitentiary with no possibility of parole for the first eight," Judge Harrison declared, bringing the gavel down with a sharp, echoing crack.

Brenda let out a low, choked sob, burying her face in her trembling hands.

As the bailiffs stepped forward to cuff her wrists, her attorney leaned over and whispered something into her ear. Brenda whipped her head around, her eyes locking onto mine in the gallery. Her expression wasn't sorrowful anymore—it was a twisted, manic grin.

"You think you won everything, Madison?!" Brenda screamed as they hauled her toward the side exit. "You don't know what your father hid in the basement safe! There's a reason he never let you down there alone!"

The courtroom went dead silent. Even the judge paused, looking up from her notes.

My heart skipped a beat. The basement safe? My father had always told me that safe was just full of old tax forms and family deeds. Or so I thought.
