Chapter 8 - The Tables TurnEthan stared down in absolute disbelief. "No... no, that’s impossible. We paid off the entire precinct!"

"You paid off local cops, son. But federal oversight has been investigating the Sterling Estate’s offshore accounts for six months," Director Hayes called out through a megaphone. "And thanks to an anonymous tip sent to our cyber crimes division this morning..." Hayes gestured upward toward the roof "...we have everything we need."
Claire watched the scene unfold, her chest heaving as realization finally dawned on her. The anonymous tip wasn't from her.
She turned her gaze toward the window hatch behind Ethan.
Eleanor stepped out onto the roof, her designer heels clicking lightly against the slate tiles. But she wasn't looking at the police below. She was looking straight at Ethan, a chilling, triumphant smile playing on her lips.
Ethan slowly turned around to face his stepmother. His voice dropped to a hollow whisper. "Eleanor... what did you do?"
"What I should have done twenty years ago, when your father killed my husband and stole this empire," Eleanor replied smoothly. She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small, encrypted hard drive, holding it up for the floodlights to catch. "Everything is on here, Ethan. Every illegal wire transfer, every shell corporation, and yes... the confession to Arthur’s murder. All registered under your name and social security number."

Ethan’s face drained of all color. "You... you set me up. You used me to take down my father, and now you're sacrificing me to take the fall for everything?"
"Business is business, darling," Eleanor smiled coldly. "Someone has to go to prison for the family crimes. And you always were your father's favorite."
