Chapter 2 - The Empty Bed

I didn't sleep that night. I sat in the darkness of the living room, staring at the muted television screen, listening to the faint creak of floorboards upstairs as Lauren walked quietly back and forth between her bedroom and the guest room. Every lie I had ever told myself over the years—that my affairs didn't matter, that coming home made me a good husband, that ignorance was harmless—crashed down on my head with crushing force.

For years, I had acted like a god in my own home, believing I could control the boundaries of my betrayal. I thought secrecy equaled safety. I never once considered that the person keeping the marriage alive was also the person holding the matches.

When the pale morning light finally filtered through the blinds, I walked into the kitchen like a man walking to the gallows.

Right beside the coffee maker sat a crisp, thick manila envelope.

My name was written across the front in Lauren's neat, precise handwriting: James.

I picked it up with trembling fingers, pulling out a stack of legal documents that mapped out the end of my life. No dramatic shouting. No emotional negotiations. Just cold, clinical legalese detailing custody agreements, asset divisions, and the immediate sale of our home.

As I stared at the papers, my phone buzzed violently on the counter.

An incoming text from an unknown number.

I unlocked the screen with a shaking thumb and opened the message. It was a single photograph, taken from inside a car parked just across the street from our driveway.

The photo showed Lauren stepping out of her car at a local boutique, smiling brightly as Andrew held the door open for her. But what froze the blood in my veins wasn't them—it was the caption attached to the image:

She thinks she's free of us. Tell her that secrets have a price, James. And if she wants to keep her new life, you're going to pay for what you stole from me five years ago.

My breath caught. I didn't just have a cheating wife and a crumbling marriage. I had invited an invisible, dangerous predator straight onto our doorstep without even knowing it.
