Chapter 5 - Shattered Trust

I rushed back into the kitchen, the photographs clutched so tightly in my fist that the glossy paper tore. Lauren was standing where I had left her, her face drained of all color as she looked at the terror in my eyes.
"What is it?" she breathed, stepping backward. "James, what is happening?"
I spread the photographs across the kitchen table. Pictures of our ten-year-old son, Leo, walking past the park. Pictures of our eight-year-old daughter, Maya, getting off the school bus.
Lauren let out a gasping cry, her hands flying to her mouth as tears spilled down her cheeks. The cold, distant woman who had served me divorce papers moments ago vanished, replaced instantly by a mother whose children had just been threatened by an unseen monster.
"Who are these people?" she sobbed, her voice trembling with a mixture of rage and terror. "What did you do, James? What kind of mess did you drag us into?"
"It was Chloe," I admitted, my voice breaking as the full weight of my past came crashing down on me. "Years ago, before we hit our worst patch, I had a brief relationship with an executive assistant at a firm we were acquiring. When I tried to end it, she threatened to ruin me. I thought I paid her off to make her disappear. I thought it was over!"
"You thought?" Lauren screamed, her voice cracking with a fury that shook the walls. "You thought? While you were playing games behind my back, you invited psychopaths into our orbit? You put a target on our children's backs?"
"I didn't know!" I yelled back, tears finally breaking free. "If I had known they would ever come near our family, I would have handled it differently!"
"How?" she sneered, her eyes flashing with pure venom. "By lying more? By having another affair to take your mind off it? You don't know how to fix anything, James. You only know how to run."
She grabbed her car keys from the counter and turned toward the back door.

"Where are you going?" I panicked, stepping into her path.
"I'm going to pick up the kids from school, and then I'm taking them to a hotel," she said, her voice dropping into a chilling, absolute coldness. "And if you try to follow us, or if you ever come near us again, I won't just divorce you, James. I will make sure you never see your children again for the rest of your life."
