Chapter 7 - The Diner on 4th Street

The neon sign of the 4th Street diner buzzed against the gray afternoon sky, casting a sickly pink glow over the cracked asphalt of the parking lot. I pulled my car into an empty slot, killed the engine, and sat for a moment staring at my reflection in the rearview mirror. I looked older, hollowed out, and entirely unrecognizable as the man who had walked into that Dallas café just days ago believing he was invincible.
I pushed open the diner door, the familiar bell jingling overhead. The place was nearly empty, smelling of stale coffee, fried grease, and old vinyl booths.
Sitting in a corner booth near the back was Andrew.
He looked different in person than he had across the café table. Up close, he wore an expression of calm, calculated authority, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit that looked entirely out of place in the rundown diner.
I walked over and slid into the booth across from him without a word.
"You took your time," Andrew said, not looking up from a cup of black coffee.
"Explain yourself," I demanded, leaning across the table, my voice low and fierce. "Who are you, and why are you involved in this nightmare?"
Andrew slowly set his ceramic mug down, raising his slate-gray eyes to meet mine. There was a striking familiarity in his gaze—not in appearance, but in intensity.
"My name is Andrew Sterling," he said evenly. "I’m a federal forensic accountant working undercover with the Department of Justice. And for the past six months, my primary assignment hasn't been investigating corporate embezzlement—it's been dismantling the criminal network that used your past affairs as leverage to launder money through your corporate accounts."
My jaw dropped. "What? You're a federal agent?"
"And I'm the man trying to keep your wife and kids alive while you panic," Andrew corrected sharply. "Chloe wasn't just a casual affair, James. She was a designated operative for a syndicate that used corporate acquisitions as a front for international money laundering. When you slept with her, you unknowingly signed financial authorization forms granting access to your company's secondary ledger."

"I signed nondisclosure agreements," I stammered, the memory rushing back. "Standard corporate paperwork."
"Which contained encrypted authorization keys," Andrew finished for me. "And when you tried to walk away from Chloe, her handlers realized you were sitting on a goldmine of incriminating data. They've been waiting for the right moment to squeeze you. When I got close to Lauren during my undercover work to gather intelligence on your corporate circle, I didn't plan on falling in love with her. But when I saw how broken your marriage was, and how desperately she needed someone who actually saw her, I realized how vulnerable your family really was."
