Chapter 10 - The Master of Blackwood ManorOne year later.

The heavy iron gates of Blackwood Manor stood wide open, welcoming the warm, golden light of a perfect autumn afternoon.
The crooked shutters on the eastern cottage had long since been repaired, transformed into a cozy painter's studio where Evelyn spent her afternoons sketching the sprawling gardens and the rolling hills of northern New York. But she rarely slept there anymore.
Inside the grand parlor of the manor, the atmosphere was filled with the soft hum of classical music and the quiet clink of crystal glasses.
Prominent business leaders, federal officials, and elite dignitaries filled the room, celebrating the official rebranding of the Blackwood Foundation into one of the largest animal rescue and rehabilitation networks in the country.
And standing at the center of it all, wearing a sharp, tailored charcoal suit, was Graham Hale.
But he wasn't standing alone.
Beside him, wearing an elegant emerald-silk dress that matched the deep green of her eyes, stood Evelyn. Her hands were no longer trembling; they were steady, confident, and resting comfortably in the crook of Graham’s arm.
Near the French doors leading out to the sunlit courtyard, a massive black mastiff lay stretched out across the Persian rug, snoring loudly and completely unbothered by the glittering crowd of billionaires and politicians stepping carefully around him.
A high-profile city councilman walked up to Graham, raising his glass with a respectful nod.
"Remarkable transformation of the estate, Mr. Hale," the councilman said, glancing toward Evelyn with genuine admiration. "And an even more remarkable partner. Rumor has it she runs the entire operation now."
Graham looked down at Evelyn, a slow, deeply affectionate smile spreading across his face as she rolled her eyes at the councilman's comment.
"Rumor?" Graham replied smoothly, tightening his arm around her waist. "That's an understatement. She runs me, she runs the dog, and quite frankly, she runs the entire state."
The councilman laughed, raising his glass in a toast. "To the Master and Mistress of Blackwood Manor."
"To new beginnings," Evelyn corrected softly, clinking her glass against theirs.
As the music swelled and the golden afternoon sun bathed the manor in a warm, eternal glow, Evelyn looked out across the room. There were no shadows left in the corners, no secrets buried beneath the floorboards, and no fear in her heart.
She wasn't a clumsy maid caught in a dangerous game anymore.

She was home.
And beside her, the most feared crime boss in New York leaned down and pressed a soft, lingering kiss to her temple, proving to everyone in the room—and to the ghosts of the past—that some bonds could never be broken.
