Chapter 5 - Ashes of the EmpireThe sunrise over Blackwood Manor did not bring warmth; it brought a biting, slate-gray light that cut through the frozen pine trees like a razor.

Police cruisers, unmarked federal vehicles, and forensic vans crowded the winding stone driveway, their red and blue emergency lights flashing against the gothic facade of the mansion.

Inside the grand study, the atmosphere was even colder.

Graham sat behind his mahogany desk, his fingers steepened together, staring at a laptop screen displaying a cascade of financial alerts and breaking news headlines. The media storm Vanessa had promised was already sweeping across national networks: Blackwood Empire Under Investigation; Decades-Old Murder and Embezzlement Scandals Rock Corporate Giant.

The door clicked open, and Cole stepped inside, looking grim.

"The federal marshals took Vanessa away," Cole reported. "She didn't say a word during the transfer, but her legal team is already trying to block the asset freeze. More importantly... the financial leak originated from an encrypted server routed through offshore accounts belonging to Vanessa’s shell company. She was planning to destroy your empire and frame you for it all along, regardless of whether Evelyn arrived or not."

Graham didn't look up from his screen. "And Evelyn?"

"She's in the guest wing. Refused to leave until the forensic teams finished clearing the cottage."

Graham stood up, walking silently down the long, carpeted corridor until he reached the heavy oak doors of the eastern guest suite. He raised his hand to knock, but paused when he heard a quiet voice from inside.

"No, Atlas, you cannot sleep on the velvet sofa. It's worth more than my entire life savings."

A low, contented dog rumble answered her.

Graham gently pushed the door open. Evelyn was sitting on the edge of the plush bed, wearing a simple oversized sweater, holding a cup of black coffee. Atlas lay across her feet like a heavy, breathing rug, his tail giving a lazy thump against the floorboards when he saw Graham enter.

Evelyn looked up, her green eyes cautious yet steady.

"Are the police gone?" she asked.

"Most of them," Graham replied, stopping a few feet away. "The federal prosecutors have what they need from Vanessa’s personal servers to clear my family's name regarding Elena’s death twenty-five years ago. The audit will take weeks, but... the empire survived."

"And you?" Evelyn asked softly. "Did you survive?"

Graham looked at her—really looked at her. For the first time since she had arrived at Blackwood Manor, the rigid, untouchable armor he wore around the world seemed entirely gone.

"For ten years, I believed I was cursed," Graham said, his voice dropping low. "I believed that anyone who got close to me would inevitably be destroyed by the monsters hiding in my own house. I thought keeping people out was the only way to stay safe."

He took a step closer, stopping right beside the edge of the bed.

"And then a clumsy maid slipped on the ice, threw a bucket of soapy water over my guard dog, and told me I was running things all wrong."

A small, genuine smile touched the corner of Evelyn’s lips. "I believe my exact words were that he was terrified because your handler used a metal pole."

"Details," Graham dryly replied, a rare, faint smile crossing his face.

He reached out, his hand hovering over hers for a fraction of a second before gently resting his palm over her trembling fingers. To his surprise—and hers—her hand didn't shake.

"The cottage is being repaired," Graham said quietly. "But... you don't have to go back there when it's done."

Evelyn tilted her head, her heart skipping a beat. "What are you saying, Mr. Hale?"

"I'm saying that Blackwood Manor is entirely too large for one man and a very stubborn mastiff," Graham said, his gray eyes locking onto hers with absolute intensity. "And I happen to know that the new head of estate security and household management has a remarkable eye for detail."

Atlas suddenly let out a sharp bark, sitting upright and slamming his paw directly onto Graham’s polished leather shoe as if seconding the motion.

Evelyn laughed—a bright, clear sound that chased away the last lingering shadows of the winter storm.

"Does this job offer come with health insurance and hazard pay for dealing with giant dogs?" she asked, her eyes sparkling.

Graham’s grip on her hand tightened gently. "It comes with lifetime security, unlimited coffee, and an employer who will never, ever let you fall."

Evelyn looked down at the mastiff resting his heavy head across both of their feet, then back up at the most feared man in New York, who was currently looking at her as if she were the only person in the world.

"Well," Evelyn smiled, squeezing his hand back. "I suppose I can unpack my bags."
