Chapter 7 - Descent into the Catacombs"Stay here, Atlas," Evelyn whispered, her voice tight with panic.

The mastiff let out a fierce, protesting bark, blocking her path with his massive body.

"No, boy! We have to find him!" she insisted, her hands gripping his collar before releasing it as she bolted toward the hidden service door behind the grand staircase—the very entrance Vanessa had used to access the walls months ago.

The heavy iron door swung open with a rusty groan, revealing a pitch-black, narrow stone staircase spiraling downward into the freezing darkness of the manor's foundations.

Evelyn didn't hesitate. She grabbed a heavy brass candlestick from the foyer table as a makeshift weapon and plunged into the abyss.

The air grew damp, smelling of old stone, wet earth, and rust. Every step echoed loudly against the subterranean walls.

Thump. Thump. Thump.

Above her, heavy paws suddenly hit the stone steps. Atlas had disobeyed. The massive mastiff bounded down the stairs past her, taking the lead with the fierce, protective fury of a wolf guarding its pack.

They descended three full levels beneath the manor, past the wine cellars, past the old Prohibition-era holding rooms, deeper into the forgotten tunnels that mapped the estate's dark history.

Suddenly, Atlas stopped dead in his tracks, his low growl echoing down the long, brick-lined corridor ahead.

A dim, flickering fluorescent light illuminated a heavy iron reinforced door at the end of the hall—the old security control hub that was supposed to have been sealed permanently twenty-five years ago.

The door was cracked open.

A bright yellow beam of light spilled out onto the stone floor.

Evelyn crept forward, pressing her back against the damp brick wall, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. Peering cautiously around the edge of the iron door frame, the breath caught entirely in her throat.

Inside the subterranean control room, Graham Hale was bound tightly to a steel-framed chair, his head bowed, blood dripping from a deep cut above his temple.

Standing over him was a man Evelyn had never seen before—tall, impeccably dressed in a tailored Italian suit, holding a silver-handled cane with a calm, chilling demeanor.

"You always were entirely too sentimental, Graham," the man said, his voice smooth, echoing with a cultured, aristocratic British accent. "You thought that by cleaning house and locking up Vanessa, you had solved the Blackwood family's little problem."

Graham slowly raised his head, his gray eyes flashing with fierce defiance despite the blood on his face.

"Arthur," Graham muttered through bruised lips. "I should have buried you in the North Sea a decade ago."

Arthur chuckled softly, walking slowly around the chair. "Bury me? My dear nephew, I am the Blackwood empire. Vanessa was merely an ambitious little distraction. It was my shipping routes, my offshore accounts, and my network that kept this family afloat while you played the noble CEO."

Evelyn’s hands gripped the brass candlestick so tightly her knuckles turned white.

Arthur raised his hand, pointing a heavy-caliber pistol straight at Graham’s chest.

"And now," Arthur whispered, a cruel smile spreading across his face, "the tragic accident report writes itself: Disgraced billionaire takes his own life in secret underground bunker after financial ruin. Such a sad ending for the great Blackwood legacy."

Arthur’s finger began to squeeze the trigger.
