CHAPTER 2: The Gilded Cage and the Ghost in the Files

The temptation of a stable life was too strong to resist. Three days after the encounter at the pizzeria, Amber walked through the towering glass doors of Vanguard Enterprises.
She was dressed in her absolute best—a simple black skirt and a white blouse she had meticulously ironed three times. Lily was currently downstairs in the company's state-of-the-art daycare center, happily playing with building blocks.
"Welcome to the team, Amber," Sarah, the head of HR, said with a warm smile as she handed Amber her security badge. "Your starting salary will be sixty-five thousand a year, with full medical, dental, and vision. Mr. Vance personally requested that we fast-track your onboarding."
Sixty-five thousand. To Amber, it might as well have been a million. It meant a safe apartment. It meant fresh groceries. It meant Lily could go to a good school.
"Thank you so much," Amber said, wiping away a tear of relief. "I won't let you down."
Her job was straightforward: digitizing and organizing old physical archives from the company's sub-basement. It was quiet, solitary work, which suited her perfectly. The basement archive was vast, filled with floor-to-ceiling metal shelves containing decades of corporate history.
For the first two weeks, life was a dream. Elliot visited her archive room twice, always polite, always asking how Lily was adjusting. Amber found herself falling dangerously fast for his charm, his quiet intelligence, and the effortless way he made her feel protected.
But dreams have a habit of turning into nightmares.
On a Thursday afternoon, Amber was cataloging files from three years ago—the exact year her husband Marcus had passed away. Marcus had been an independent contractor, a brilliant software engineer who had done freelance work for several major firms. Amber had never known the specifics of his projects; he had always been highly secretive about his work, claiming it was "for their protection."
As she pulled open a dusty, rusted drawer labeled Special Projects - Private Ledger, a thick manila folder fell out.
The tab on the folder read: PROJECT ECLIPSE - DISPOSAL.
Curiosity piqued, Amber opened the folder. Inside were financial transactions, wire transfers of millions of dollars to offshore accounts. But it was the last page that made her blood run entirely cold.
It was a legal settlement and nondisclosure agreement.
Attached to it was a photograph of her husband, Marcus.
Beneath his photo was a copy of his death certificate, alongside a highly confidential memo. The memo read:
Subject Marcus Vance (alias Marcus Cole) has successfully completed the backdoor integration. To prevent leaks regarding the proprietary algorithm's origin, final liquidation has been executed. No further legal liabilities remain.
Amber’s breath came in ragged, shallow gasps. Her eyes darted to the bottom of the memo. There, written in bold, unmistakable black ink, was the signature authorizing the "liquidation."
Elliot Vance.
Amber staggered back, dropping the folder. The papers scattered across the concrete floor.
Her husband hadn't died in a random hit-and-run. He had been murdered. And the man who had ordered his death was the very same man who had bought her daughter pizza, who had given her a job, and who was currently hosting her child in his building's daycare.
Suddenly, the heavy metal door of the archive room creaked open.
"Amber?"
May you like
She spun around, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.
Standing in the doorway, silhouetted by the harsh hallway light, was Elliot.
