CHAPTER 4: The Game of Mirrors

The walk to the upper levels was a blur of adrenaline and terror. Elliot led Amber through a maze of service stairwells, bypassing the main elevators which had been deactivated by the security breach.

"How did they get past your security?" Amber cried, her legs feeling like lead as they sprinted up the concrete stairs.

"Finch has inside help," Elliot hissed, his hand resting on a sleek silver handgun he had pulled from a hidden wall safe in his private office hallway. "The board is turning against me. They want the encryption keys, and they'll burn the whole company down to get them."

They reached the third-floor daycare center. The heavy double glass doors were shattered, sparkling shards of glass littering the carpet. The children and staff had been evacuated to a safe room, but the room was empty of its primary target.

Standing in the center of the room, holding a crying Lily by her jacket, was the scarred man—Silas.

Three other armed men in tactical gear stood behind him.

"Mommy!" Lily shrieked, tears streaming down her small face. "Mommy, help!"

"Lily!" Amber screamed, lunging forward, but Elliot caught her arm, pulling her behind his solid frame.

"Silas," Elliot said, his voice dropping to a low, lethal register. "This is between us. Let the kid go."

Silas let out a dry, raspy chuckle. "Nothing is personal in this business, Vance. Mr. Finch wants the decryption drive. The kid is our insurance policy. Drop your weapon, or she takes a fall from the balcony."

Silas pointed toward the massive open-air atrium balcony just behind him, a fifty-foot drop to the marble lobby below.

"Don't do it, Elliot," Amber begged, clutching his arm.

Elliot looked at Amber. In his eyes, she saw a profound, silent apology.

"I'm sorry, Amber," he whispered. "I promised I would keep you safe."

Slowly, Elliot lowered his gun and placed it on the floor. He kicked it away.

"Smart move," Silas grinned. He gestured to one of his men. "Secure them."

But as the guard stepped forward, Elliot didn't surrender. With lightning-fast reflexes, he grabbed a heavy metal chair from a nearby desk and swung it, crashing it into the guard’s face.

Chaos erupted.

Gunfire shattered the remaining glass. Elliot lunged toward Silas, tackling him to the ground. Lily was knocked free, screaming as she slid across the slick floor.

"Lily, run to Mommy!" Amber yelled, dodging a stray bullet as she scrambled across the floor to grab her daughter. She wrapped her arms around Lily, shielding her body with her own.

Elliot and Silas wrestled for control of Silas’s weapon. A deafening BANG echoed through the room.

Elliot stiffened.

He slowly looked down at his chest, where a dark crimson stain was rapidly spreading across his blue shirt. He stumbled back, his eyes locked on Amber.

"Run..." Elliot gasped, blood coughing from his lips. "Amber... get to... the safehouse..."

Silas stood up, nursing a bruised jaw, and pointed his gun directly at Amber's head. "The game is over, sweetheart. You're coming with us."

But before Silas could pull the trigger, the heavy steel security doors of the daycare burst open.

A squad of heavily armed, black-clad tactical officers flooded the room. But they weren't Vanguard security. They wore the insignias of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

"FBI! Drop your weapons! Now!"

Silas cursed, dropping his gun and raising his hands. The remaining guards followed suit.

Amber didn't care about the police. She scrambled over to Elliot, who had collapsed against the wall. She pressed her hands against his chest, trying desperately to stop the bleeding.

"Elliot, stay with me! Please, don't die!" she cried.

Elliot reached up, his trembling, blood-stained fingers gently touching her cheek.

"Go to... the address... in my desk..." he whispered, his voice fading. "Marcus... is waiting..."
