CHAPTER 3: The Protector or the Monster?

Elliot took a step into the room, his eyes instantly dropping to the scattered papers on the floor. His gaze lingered on the photograph of Marcus.
Amber backed away until her spine hit the cold metal shelves. "Stay back," she whispered, her voice shaking violently. "Don't come near me."
Elliot closed the heavy door behind him, cutting off the noise from the rest of the building. The silence in the basement was suffocating.
"You shouldn't have been looking through those files, Amber," Elliot said, his voice terrifyingly calm.
"You killed him," she sobbed, tears spilling down her cheeks. "My husband... Marcus. He worked for you, and you had him killed to cover up your proprietary algorithm! You brought me here... you gave me this job... why? To keep an eye on me? To make sure I didn't find out?"
Elliot let out a long, slow sigh. He didn't look angry. He looked incredibly tired.
"Amber, I need you to listen to me very carefully," he said, taking a slow, non-threatening step forward. "I did not kill Marcus."
"His death warrant has your signature on it!" she screamed, pointing a trembling finger at the paper on the floor.
"Yes, it does," Elliot replied. "Because three years ago, my board of directors and my former partner, Thomas Finch, held the majority share of this company. They discovered Marcus had built a backdoor into our security network to expose their illegal offshore money laundering. They wanted him dead. They drafted that document, and they threatened to destroy my family if I didn't sign off on his 'disposal'."
"So you signed it to save yourself!"
"No," Elliot said, his eyes burning with an intense sincerity. "I signed it to buy time. I used my personal security team to intercept the hitman. The hit-and-run was staged, Amber. We put a John Doe in that car, and we smuggled Marcus out of the state."
Amber's mind reeled. "What... what are you saying? Marcus is..."
"Marcus is alive," Elliot said softly. "But he is in hiding. And the people who wanted him dead are now realizing that he didn't actually die. That man with the scar you saw outside the pizzeria? His name is Silas. He is Thomas Finch's personal fixer. He has been searching for Marcus for three years. When he saw you with me, he realized the connection."
Amber felt the room spinning. "No... this can't be true. This is a lie to protect yourself."
"If I wanted to hurt you or Lily, why would I put you in my own building under maximum security?" Elliot asked, his voice rising with urgency. "Finch is planning a hostile takeover of Vanguard next week. If he finds out where Marcus is, he will use you and Lily as leverage to force Marcus to hand over the master encryption keys. I brought you here to keep you safe."
Before Amber could process his words, the overhead lights suddenly flickered and died.
The entire basement was plunged into pitch-black darkness.
A second later, the building's red emergency backup lights kicked in, casting a blood-red glow over the metal shelves.
Then, the high-pitched wail of the building's security alarm began to scream.
“Intruder alert. Sector 4 breached. Lock down initiated.”

Elliot’s phone buzzed violently in his pocket. He pulled it out, his face pale under the red lights.
"We have to go. Now," Elliot said, his voice laced with sudden panic. "Silas and his men just breached the daycare center. They have Lily."
