Chapter 1 - The First BreathThe cold aluminum of the stretcher bit into Maren’s shoulders, but for the first time in twenty minutes, air actually reached her lungs. The epinephrine burned a fiery path through her veins, a sharp, chemical jolt that forced her constricted airways to open.

Above her, the rhythmic hiss of the oxygen mask provided a steady, mechanical heartbeat in a world that had tilted entirely off its axis.

Through the clear plastic, Maren watched the ceiling lights streak past as the paramedics wheeled her out toward the waiting private ambulance. The night air hit her skin—crisp, autumn air smelling faintly of pine and asphalt—and then the heavy doors of the vehicle slammed shut, cutting off the noise of the house.

Her mother sat on the bench opposite the stretcher.

Clara Whitaker—or whatever name she had lived under for the past fifteen years—kept her gaze fixed entirely on Maren. Her hands were folded tightly over her structured black handbag, the knuckles white. The resemblance was staggering, a living mirror reflecting the features Maren thought had vanished forever into a polished granite headstone in the family plot.

"Don't try to speak yet," her mother said. Her voice was lower than Maren remembered, edged with a cold, hardened steel that years of hiding and survival must have forged. "The medical team is stabilizing your heart rate. You're safe now."

Maren managed a fractional nod. Every muscle in her body ached, exhausted from the sudden shock of anaphylaxis and the brutal fall Reed had forced upon her.

Through the frosted glass window of the ambulance doors, the flashing red and blue strobes of private security vehicles painted the driveway in violent neon pulses. Reed and Celeste were out there. Surrounded. Cut off from the multi-million-dollar empire they had plotted to steal, and trapped by a ghost they thought they had buried a decade and a half ago.

Maren closed her eyes, letting the medical monitors hum their steady reassurance. The trap hadn't caught her. It had caught them.
