Chapter 8 - The Press ConferenceBy ten o'clock the following morning, the front steps of Whitaker Medical Holdings were swallowed by a chaotic sea of reporters, flashing camera bulbs, and satellite trucks.

The national news anchors were broadcasting live from the scene, speculating wildly about the sudden overnight arrest of CEO Reed Whitaker on charges of corporate fraud, conspiracy, and attempted murder.
The heavy glass double doors of the lobby swung open.
A wave of murmurs and camera shutters erupted as Clara Whitaker stepped out first, her posture immaculate, wearing a tailored white suit that commanded absolute attention.
And then, walking beside her under her own power, supported by the sleek, high-tech carbon-fiber braces concealed beneath a sharp navy blazer, came Maren Whitaker.
She didn't use a wheelchair. She didn't lean on a cane.
She walked with a slow, deliberate, unbreakable stride straight to the podium.
Microphones bristled across the ledge like a wall of silver steel. Flashbulbs strobed continuously, blinding in their intensity.
Maren placed both hands on the wooden podium, looking directly into the primary camera lens that was broadcasting live to millions of viewers across the globe—including a small television screen in a maximum-security holding cell forty miles away.
"Good morning," Maren said, her voice clear, steady, and echoing across the plaza.
"Yesterday evening, federal authorities arrested former CEO Reed Whitaker and his associates for systemic financial corruption and conspiracy against this corporation. For fifteen years, men like Reed believed that exploiting vulnerability was a shortcut to power. They believed that hiding behind corporate facades and staged tragedies would keep their crimes buried."

She paused, letting her gaze sweep across the sea of journalists before locking onto the camera once more.
"They were wrong. Some secrets don't stay buried in the ground. And some survivors don't just wait for rescue—they build their own escape plans."
