Chapter 2 - The Ghost in the OfficeDawn broke over the Pacific Northwest, painting the jagged mountain peaks in bruised shades of violet and gold.

Inside the primary executive suite of Whitaker Medical Holdings, the atmosphere was far colder than the morning air outside. The heavy mahogany doors were locked from the inside.

Maren sat behind her father’s grand oak desk, her hands wrapped around a ceramic mug of black coffee. Though she was still pale, the color had returned to her cheeks, and the lingering tightness in her chest had faded to a dull ache.

Standing by the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking down at the corporate courtyard where federal and private investigators were already beginning to gather, was Clara.

"The board has been notified of an emergency session," Clara said without turning around. "By noon, Reed's credentials will be permanently revoked. His access to the R&D division, the financial trusts, and the international patent vaults is already scrubbed."

Maren took a slow sip of coffee. "How did you find out?" she asked, her voice still raspy. "For fifteen years, everyone—including the police, the coroner, and my own lawyers—believed you died in that plane crash over the Pacific."

Clara turned slowly, leaning back against the glass. The morning light caught the silver ring on her finger, the heavy signet bearing the Whitaker family crest.

"It wasn't a plane crash, Maren," Clara said quietly. "It was an assassination attempt. Your father discovered a faction within the board—men Reed was secretly aligned with even then—trying to siphon defense funding through our medical tech subsidiaries. The crash was staged to eliminate us both. I survived because I was pulled from the wreckage before the fuel tanks ignited. But the men who hunted us wanted my silence. To keep you safe, your father and I made the hardest choice a parent can make: we let the world think I was dead, while I built a network from the shadows to dismantle them piece by piece."

Maren stared at her mother, the pieces of a fragmented childhood suddenly clicking into place. The sudden security protocols. Her father's constant paranoia. The eerie silence surrounding the accident.

"And Reed?" Maren asked, her eyes narrowing. "When did he become part of their circle?"

"Reed didn't just join them," Clara said, her lips thinning into a dangerous line. "He married into them for the express purpose of seizing this company. The accident that paralyzed your legs wasn't a random hit-and-run, Maren."

The coffee mug nearly slipped from Maren's fingers. The room seemed to drop ten degrees.

"What did you say?"
