Chapter 8 - The Ultimate BetrayalEthan’s muscles tensed, ready to hurl the heavy wrench, but the nurse’s finger tightened ever so slightly on the trigger.

"Don't even think about it," she warned, her voice unnervingly calm. "One twitch, and a heavy dose of potassium chloride goes straight into Claire's IV. You want to save her? Drop the weapon."

Slowly, deliberately, Ethan let the wrench slip from his fingers, letting it clang loudly against the linoleum floor. "What do you people want? You already have the company, the money, the estate—what more could you possibly steal?"

"Everything," a voice whispered from the doorway.

Ethan turned his head. Standing in the entrance, leaning casually against the doorframe, was someone he never, ever expected to see. Someone who was supposed to be dead, buried, and forgotten.

It was Claire’s attending physician, Dr. Marcus Thorne—and standing right beside him, clapping her hands softly in mock applause, was Claire herself.

Ethan stumbled backward, his breath catching in his throat. He stared from the woman standing by the door to the woman lying motionless on the hospital bed.

"C-Claire?" Ethan stammered, his mind shattering into a million pieces. "How... you were in surgery... she was dying..."

The woman by the door stepped into the light, a brilliant, chilling smile on her lips. She didn't look injured at all. The pale hospital gown couldn't hide the expensive diamond necklace she had slipped on under the collar.

"Oh, Ethan," Claire—or whoever she really was—laughed, a cold, metallic sound. "Did you really think a clumsy fall down the stairs would break a masterclass actress?"
