Chapter 1 - The Fall and the FacadeThe cold marble floor of the grand foyer felt like ice against Claire’s back, but the burning pain radiating from her shoulder and ribs drowned out everything else. Above her, at the top of the sweeping double staircase, Eleanor stood frozen, her hands still outstretched from the violent shove. The pristine ivory silk of Eleanor’s designer gown seemed to mock the chaos unfolding below.

"You should never have come back here," Eleanor’s voice echoed through the high-ceilinged hall, sharp and devoid of remorse.
Claire gasped, clutching at her chest. "Let go of me!" she had cried out just moments before the gravity took hold, her warning ignored as Eleanor’s strength proved too much for her weakened frame.
The party guests, glittering in diamonds and tuxedoes, recoiled in horror. Gasps and shrieks ricocheted off the crystal chandeliers.
"Oh my god, she pushed her!" a woman in a crimson dress shrieked, pressing trembling hands to her mouth.
Panic rippled through the elite crowd. "Someone help her, please!" the head maid cried, dropping a silver tray of champagne flutes that shattered into a thousand glittering shards against the floor.
Before anyone else could move, heavy footsteps thundered across the parquet flooring.
"Hold on, I'm coming!" Ethan’s voice cut through the noise like a blade. He dropped to his knees beside Claire, his face pale with a terrifying mix of fury and terror.
"Claire..." he breathed, his hands hovering over her as if afraid to break her further.
Claire blinked through a haze of pain, her fingers blindly reaching up to catch his sleeve. "Ethan..."
"I've got you. I've got you," he repeated, his voice cracking. He pulled her upper body gently against his chest, shielding her from the staring, morbidly curious eyes of high society.
Claire choked on a sob, her chest constricting violently. "I'm... I can't breathe..."
"Look at me. Stay with me," Ethan ordered fiercely, his eyes locked onto hers, willing her to hold on. He whipped his head up, glaring at the paralyzed crowd. "Somebody do something! Call an ambulance! Call the police!"

High above them on the landing, Eleanor lowered her hands, a cold, calculated smirk touching the corners of her lips. She didn't look like a woman who had just committed attempted murder; she looked like a queen surveying her conquered territory.
Little did anyone in this room know, the fall down these stairs wasn’t the climax of a tragic accident or a fit of jealousy. It was the activation code for a trap five years in the making. And the truth hidden beneath this glittering estate was far more shocking than anyone could ever imagine.
