Chapter 1 - The Lie in the Medical Records

The cold water dripped from the girl's chin onto her soaked sneakers, but the chill in her bones had nothing to do with the wet afternoon air.

"I... I didn't know," the girl repeated, her voice barely a breath. She stood on trembling legs, staring down at the wet concrete beneath her feet as if the earth itself had shifted.

The man in the black suit, Arthur Vance, reached out with steady, warm hands, supporting her elbows without forcing her. "Take your time, Maya. You're safe now."

Behind them, the middle-aged woman—Evelyn, the chief caretaker of the Vance Manor—stared in open horror at Maya’s standing figure. The hose hissed on the pavement, spewing a steady stream of water into the gutter. Evelyn’s face transformed from cold disdain to absolute panic.

"This... this is impossible," Evelyn stammered, taking a step backward. "The doctors at Saint Jude’s certified her lower limbs completely paralyzed six years ago! The medical reports are absolute!"

Arthur didn't turn around. His dark eyes remained fixed on Maya's pale, frightened face. "The medical reports you managed, Evelyn? The ones my late brother paid you tens of thousands of dollars a month to handle?"

Arthur gently helped Maya sit back into the wheelchair before removing his tailored suit jacket and draping it over her shivering shoulders. He pulled out his phone, his thumb gliding across the screen.

"Arthur, please!" Evelyn rushed forward, her hands clawing at his sleeve. "You don't understand the situation! Her father—your brother—left strict instructions! It was for her protection! If the creditors knew she was healthy—"

"Get your hands off me," Arthur said, his voice dropping into a register that made even the surrounding security guards tense up. "You just sprayed an eleven-year-old orphan with a high-pressure hose in forty-degree weather. You're done."

Two heavy-set security guards stepped out of the black SUV, instantly pinning Evelyn's arms behind her back. She began to shriek obscenities, her aristocratic composure completely shattering as she was dragged toward a secondary vehicle.

Arthur knelt beside Maya again. "Maya, I am your uncle. I know you don't remember me—I've been overseas for six years. But I am here to take you home."

Maya looked at him, her blue eyes wide and hollow. "Why did she tell me I was broken, Uncle Arthur? Why did she give me those small blue pills every morning?"

Arthur’s heart slammed against his ribs. Pills?

He reached into his pocket, pulled out an encrypted phone, and dialed a private number.

"Dr. Chen," Arthur spoke into the receiver, his voice tight. "Run an immediate, full-spectrum toxicology screen on Maya Vance. And lock down the medical archive at the estate."

He looked back at Maya, wiping a strand of wet hair from her face. "We are going to find out what they did to you, sweetheart. Every single person involved."

HOOK / CLIFFHANGER: As the SUV sped toward the Vance Estate, Arthur’s phone vibrated with an incoming text from an unlisted number. He opened the encrypted image: It was a hidden camera snapshot of Maya taken thirty seconds ago from inside the car, with a caption that read: "If she walks, she dies. Turn the car around."
