Chapter 5 - Unraveling the Web
The boardroom fell into deathly silence.
Helen’s composure cracked for a fraction of a second, her right hand twitching against the mahogany desk. "The child is delusional. She's suffering from toxin-induced hallucinations. Take her away!"
"Don't touch her!" Arthur roared, stepping between the guards and Maya, his hand instantly reaching for his sidearm.
"Wait!" Maya shouted, standing her ground with a newfound strength that shocked everyone in the room. She reached into the small purse she was carrying and pulled out an old, water-damaged micro-cassette tape.
"My mother hid this inside my favorite stuffed bear six years ago," Maya said, holding the tape up for the board members and news cameras to see. "She told me to keep it safe until I was strong enough to understand."
Dr. Chen immediately took the tape, walked over to the boardroom's media console, and inserted it into the digital converter.
A woman's panicked, trembling voice echoed through the high-definition speakers of the boardroom:
> "If you are listening to this... it means Helen and Richard have succeeded in poisoning me. They found out I was going to the federal authorities about the illegal chemical division. Richard isn't doing this willingly—Helen is blackmailing him with his own past crimes. If anything happens to me, protect Maya... they plan to use her to access the offshore accounts..."
The recording cut into sharp static, followed by the sound of a violent struggle and a door slamming shut.
The board members were pale with horror. Several directors immediately stood up, backing away from Helen as if she were a venomous snake.
"This is a forgery!" Helen shouted, her face twisting into a mask of pure fury. "Security, clear this room immediately!"
"Security isn't taking orders from you anymore, Mrs. Vance," Detective Marcus Vance (no relation), head of the Financial Crimes Division, announced as he stepped through the boardroom doors accompanied by federal agents.
"Helen Vance, you are under arrest for attempted murder, child endangerment, corporate fraud, and conspiracy."
Federal agents moved in, slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto Helen's wrists. She glared at Arthur and Maya with pure, unadulterated hatred as she was dragged toward the executive elevator.

"You think this is over, Arthur?" Helen spat as the elevator doors began to close. "You have no idea what Richard built under that mountain! You'll all burn!"
HOOK / CLIFFHANGER: As the police led Helen away, Maya’s phone in her pocket began to ring. It was an incoming video call from an encrypted satellite network. Maya answered it—and the screen showed her father, Richard Vance, sitting inside a high-tech underground bunker, holding a remote detonator! "Hello, sweetheart," Richard whispered. "Welcome to the end of the world."
