Chapter 2 - The Toxicology Nightmare

The tires screeched as Arthur’s driver slammed on the brakes, turning hard into the subterranean medical bay beneath the Vance Private Clinic.

"Drive straight into Bay 4!" Arthur shouted, pulling a hidden latch beneath his seat. A compartment popped open, revealing a compact tactical pistol. He checked the magazine, chambered a round, and tucked it into his holster.

Maya clutched his arm, her knuckles white. "Uncle Arthur... who sent that message?"

"Nobody who can hurt you while I'm breathing," Arthur promised softly, lifting her gently into his arms and carrying her through the heavy steel doors of the clinic.

Inside, Dr. Sarah Chen—a brilliant toxicologist and Arthur's most trusted ally—was already waiting with a medical team. Within minutes, Maya was wrapped in heated blankets, hooked up to monitors, and having blood drawn.

Arthur stood outside the glass isolation chamber, pacing back and forth like a caged predator.

"Arthur," Dr. Chen called out, stepping through the sanitized airlock. Her face was deathly pale, holding a digital clipboard with fresh test results.

"What did you find, Sarah?"

"It’s horrifying," Dr. Chen said, her voice shaking with genuine disgust. "Her spine is completely intact. There is zero nerve damage. The reason her legs haven't worked properly for six years isn't paralysis—it's heavy neurological suppression."

Arthur’s jaw clenched so hard his teeth clicked. "The blue pills?"

"A compound called Neuro-Block 9," Dr. Chen confirmed, scrolling through the chemical breakdown. "It’s an experimental neuromuscular inhibitor prohibited by international law. It selectively numbs the lower motor neurons while keeping the brain conscious. In small doses, it causes temporary weakness. In the daily doses she was receiving... it simulated permanent paraplegia."

"Who manufactured it?" Arthur demanded, his eyes burning with absolute rage.

"That's the terrifying part," Dr. Chen whispered, leaning closer. "The patent for Neuro-Block 9 belongs to Vance Pharmaceutical Holdings—your family’s flagship enterprise. And the authorization forms for her monthly supply were signed by your late brother, Richard... three days after he supposedly died in the plane crash."

Arthur froze. The air in the corridor felt instantly ice-cold.

"What did you just say?" Arthur whispered. "Richard died six months ago. His body was recovered from the ocean."

"Then explain to me how his private biometric key was used at the central lab in Geneva yesterday to order another batch of the drug," Dr. Chen said, showing him the digital audit log.

Suddenly, the red emergency lights in the corridor began to flash. The high-pitched screech of an intruder alert echoed through the building!

HOOK / CLIFFHANGER: The glass windows of the medical bay shattered inward! Gas canisters tumbled across the polished floor, spewing thick white smoke. Masked operatives armed with silenced submachine guns rushed into the room, pointing their weapons directly at Maya's bed!
