Chapter 1: The Silence Before the Storm

The thick dark braid lay in the dust like a dead snake. The colonel, breathing heavily, smirked as he sheared off a few remaining uneven strands. He expected Anna to drop to her knees. He expected the tears of a broken woman.
Instead, Anna slowly looked down at the severed hair, then looked up. Her icy blue eyes locked onto the colonel’s.
"Are you finished, sir?" she asked, her voice eerily steady.
"Return to formation, recruit," the colonel spat, unnerved by her lack of emotion.
Anna didn’t move toward the ranks. Instead, she knelt down, picked up her severed braid, and pulled a lighter from her pocket. In front of three hundred soldiers, she set her own hair on fire. As the foul-smelling smoke rose into the sky, she looked the colonel dead in the eye and whispered:
"You thought you cut off my beauty, Colonel. You just cut off my restraint."

Without waiting for permission, Anna turned her back on him and marched toward the barracks. The crowd gasped. Standing up to the colonel once was reckless; doing it twice was a death wish. But Anna wasn't a normal recruit. As she reached her locker, she pulled out a secure, encrypted satellite phone. She dialed a number that bypassed the entire military base's firewall.
"It's me," Anna said into the receiver, her voice dropping all military formality. "The trap is set. He took the bait. Send the wolves."
