CHAPTER 1 — THE DAY HAMMER LOST HIS VOICE
No one at Northern Corps Military Academy questioned Colonel Viktor Volkov.
They called him "Hammer" because he believed people weren't trained—they were broken and rebuilt. Cadets whispered his nickname only behind locked doors. One careless word in public could end a military career before it even began.
By sunrise, more than three hundred recruits stood motionless beneath the scorching summer heat. Boots aligned. Uniforms spotless. Every heartbeat echoed across the silent parade ground.
Then Hammer stopped walking.
His eyes locked onto the smallest cadet in the final row.
She couldn't have been older than twenty.
Slim.
Calm.
Perfect posture.
Unlike everyone else, she didn't immediately lower her eyes.
That single act of confidence enraged him.
"You think you're different?" his booming voice thundered.
"No, Colonel."
Her answer was respectful...
Too respectful.
Too calm.
"You don't deserve to look an officer in the eye."
He stepped closer until only inches separated them.
"On your knees."
Gasps rippled through the formation.
Nobody moved.
Everyone knew what happened to recruits Hammer singled out.
Without protest, the young woman slowly knelt onto the burning concrete.
The Colonel smiled.
He shoved her shoulder.
Her cap rolled across the parade ground.
Several nervous cadets laughed, desperate not to become the next target.
"That's your place," Hammer sneered.
The girl never reacted.
She simply reached into the inside pocket of her uniform.
Hammer chuckled.
"What now? A tissue?"
Instead...
She quietly removed a small black leather case.
She opened it.
Inside rested a military challenge coin unlike anything anyone there had ever seen.
The academy crest.
A gold eagle.
And beneath it...
One engraved sentence.
AUTHORIZED BY THE MINISTER OF DEFENSE — SPECIAL OVERSIGHT DIVISION
Hammer's smile disappeared.
His face turned white.
For the first time in twenty-five years...
The man feared by everyone took one step backward.
No one understood why.
Not yet.
But the parade ground had already fallen into complete silence.
