Chapter 3 - THE TRAP IS SET

At a shabby two-star hotel near the North Bus Terminal in Mexico City, the atmosphere was suffocating.
Elena sat on the edge of a stained bed, her mascara ruined, clutching a lukewarm cup of instant coffee. Sofia was pacing back and forth across the small room, furiously tapping on her phone, screaming into the receiver.
"What do you mean my card is blocked for hotel payment?!" Sofia yelled into the mic. "I am Sofia Cordoba! Check it again!... Hello? Hello?!"
She threw her phone onto the bed in rage. "That stupid front desk clerk hung up on me! Mom, what are we doing here?! This place smells like bleach and cheap tobacco! Call my uncles! Call Aunt Patricia! They were at the party last night laughing with us! They owe us!"
"I already called them!" Elena snapped, her voice cracking with desperation. "All of them! Your Aunt Patricia, Uncle Fernando, cousin Gabriel... as soon as they found out Roberto froze our assets, they blocked my number! They don't want to get blacklisted by Roberto’s construction firm! They're absolute cowards!"
Just then, Elena’s private phone—a secret burner phone hidden inside the lining of her luxury coat—began to ring.
Elena snatched it up frantically. "Alejandro! Thank God! Did you see what happened? Roberto threw us out! He shut down all the accounts! Everything is gone!"
On the line, a suave, relaxed voice answered from a sunny balcony in Miami. "Calm down, Elena. You're panicking over small money."
"Small money?!" Elena cried. "He took the Mercedes! He kicked us out of the Lomas mansion! Sofia’s school is gone! We have six hundred pesos in cash left between us!"
"Listen to me carefully," Alejandro said smoothly, taking a sip of an iced beverage. "The Zurich account has $4.2 million from the foundation. Plus, the money we laundered through the Belize shell corporations. We have almost six million dollars cash waiting for us. We don't need Roberto anymore."
Sofia grabbed the phone from her mother. "Dad! Send us money right now! Wire $10,000 to my account so we can get a penthouse suite at the Four Seasons!"
"I can't wire funds directly to your Mexican bank accounts right now, Sofia," Alejandro instructed carefully. "If Roberto files a civil suit, the Mexican courts will freeze any incoming international wires to your names. You need to get out of Mexico immediately. Fly to Cancun tonight. I will meet you at the private terminal in Cancun tomorrow morning, and we fly directly to Saint Martin, then to Madrid. Once we are in Spain, we transfer the Swiss funds into our European offshore trust. We will be rich forever."
Elena took the phone back, her heart racing with a mixture of terror and dark excitement. "Can you buy us two flight tickets to Cancun right now?"
"I’ll buy them online within the hour," Alejandro assured them. "Just get to the airport. Pack low-profile. Don't carry any luxury branded bags. Just get on that plane."
Elena hung up the phone and looked at her daughter. For the first time in six hours, a smirk returned to her face.
"Pack the bags, Sofia," Elena said, brushing her hair back. "Let Roberto keep his stupid house and his stupid construction trucks. We’re leaving with six million dollars of his money. Let's see who laughs last when he realizes he paid for my real husband's retirement!"
Little did Elena know, every single word spoken in that room was being recorded.
Two floors below, sitting in a blacked-out van parked outside the hotel, a technician wearing high-grade noise-canceling headphones adjusted his equipment. He looked over at Mateo, who was sitting in the passenger seat.
"We have full audio confirmation of the conspiracy, Mr. Vargas," the technician said. "They are planning to flee to Cancun tonight at 9:00 PM on a commercial flight, then meet Alejandro Valdovinos at the private jet terminal at 8:00 AM tomorrow."
Mateo picked up his encrypted phone and dialed Roberto.
"They took the bait, Roberto," Mateo reported. "Alejandro told them to meet him in Cancun tomorrow morning. He’s flying in from Miami on a chartered Bombardier Global 5000."
"Is the Mexican Federal Police task force ready?" Roberto asked cold-heartedly from his desk.
"Interpol and the Fiscalía General de la República (FGR) are fully aligned," Mateo confirmed. "Because the stolen foundation funds involve international wire fraud and tax evasion across borders, the federal authorities are treating this as an international money laundering syndicate. They won't arrest Elena and Sofia at the Mexico City airport."
"Good," Roberto said, standing up and pulling on his suit jacket. "Let them think they escaped. Let them feel the sweet relief of winning... right until the moment Alejandro lands."
"And what about your private flight to Cancun, Don Roberto?"

Roberto adjusted his gold cufflinks, his eyes glinting with ruthless determination.
"Have my private jet ready at Toluca airport in thirty minutes," Roberto replied. "I want front-row seats for the grand finale."
