Chapter 6 - THE ULTIMATE PLOT TWIST

Three weeks later.
The dark clouds of scandal had cleared over Mexico City. The story of Roberto Cordoba’s brilliant destruction of the family scam had become legend in the business world. Stock prices for Grupo Construcciones Cordoba had soared to an all-time high following the public praise for his swift ethical cleanup of the charity foundation.
In the maximum-security visitation hall of Santa Martha Acatitla women's prison, the air was cold and smelled of damp concrete and industrial bleach.
Elena sat behind a thick glass partition, wearing a dull grey prisoner uniform. Her hair was unwashed, her skin pale and wrinkled without makeup, and her eyes hollow with deep despair.
On the other side of the glass, Roberto sat down comfortably in a dark suit.
Elena picked up the black plastic intercom phone with trembling hands. Roberto slowly lifted his.
"Roberto..." Elena wept, her forehead touching the glass. "Please... I am begging you. The lawyers you sent for Sofia said she’s going to be sentenced to six years. She’s only twenty-two! Her life is ruined! Please drop the accomplice charges against her... do whatever you want to me, but save my daughter!"
Roberto looked at her through the glass, his face entirely unreadable.
"Do you remember what you said at the restaurant, Elena?" Roberto asked softly. "You said I had no right to demand respect that didn't belong to me."
"I was wrong! I was stupid! I was infected by vanity and money!" Elena sobbed frantically. "I regret every second of it! If I could go back to that night, I would have slapped Sofia myself! I would have honored you in front of everyone!"
"It was never about the spilled drink, Elena," Roberto replied calmly. "It was about sixteen years of venom hidden behind smiles. You didn't just betray my trust. You used my mother’s name—the foundation built in her memory—to feed your greed."
"I know... I know!" Elena cried. "I’ll serve my twenty-five years! Just help Sofia! She’s young! She was just following her father's influence!"
Roberto leaned closer to the microphone, his eyes fixing onto Elena’s with a sudden, sharp intensity that made her breath catch in her throat.
"Speaking of her father, Elena..." Roberto murmured. "While my legal team was preparing the asset forfeiture documentation for the court... we had to perform standard genetic markers tests on Sofia to verify her status as a potential legal heir to clear any remaining trust disputes."
Elena’s heart skipped a beat. Her eyes widened in pure horror. "What... what are you talking about?"
Roberto pulled a white envelope from his inner jacket pocket and pressed it flat against the glass screen.
Inside was a certified DNA Analysis Report from the National Institute of Genomic Medicine.
"When Alejandro was arrested, the federal authorities took his DNA sample for Interpol's database," Roberto said, his voice dropping to a deadly whisper. "We cross-referenced his DNA with Sofia’s."
Elena’s hand began to shake so violently she could barely hold the phone to her ear.
"The test results came back three days ago, Elena," Roberto smiled—a slow, shocking, terrifying smile that sent chills straight down her spine. "Alejandro Valdovinos... is NOT Sofia’s biological father."
Elena let out a choked gasp, her face draining of every drop of color. "No... no..."
"Alejandro spent fifteen years believing he was using you to scam me," Roberto chuckled softly. "He spent fifteen years helping you steal from my foundation, thinking he was securing a future for his daughter."
Roberto leaned in until his nose almost touched the glass.
"Sofia's biological father was a low-level nightclub manager in Guadalajara who died in 2005. You lied to Alejandro for twenty-two years just to get him to participate in your scam. You played him just like you tried to play me."
Elena slumped forward, her tears stopping as absolute horror paralyzed her entire body.
"Yesterday morning, my legal team delivered a copy of this DNA report to Alejandro’s cell block in the Altiplano Maximum Security Prison," Roberto whispered smoothly. "Do you know what Alejandro did when he realized he spent fifteen years as an international fugitive for a child that wasn't even his?"
Elena squeezed her eyes shut, sobbing in pure agony. "Stop... please, stop..."
"He gave the federal prosecutors full, undisputed testimony detailing every single wire transfer, every offshore account, and every document you ever signed," Roberto revealed. "He made a plea deal that added ten more years to your sentence while cutting his own. He handed you to the prosecutors on a silver platter."
Elena dropped the phone speaker. It dangled by its coiled cord, bouncing against the concrete wall, emitting hollow staticky noise.
Through the glass, she watched Roberto stand up button his tailored charcoal jacket, and look down at her one last time.
"You built your life on a mountain of lies, Elena," Roberto said, his voice echoing clearly through the speaker holes in the partition. "And now, you will have twenty-five years in a six-by-eight cell to think about every single one of them."
Roberto turned around and walked down the long, lit corridor of the prison, stepping out into the bright, warm sunshine of Mexico City.
Outside the prison gates, his private driver stood holding the door open to a brand-new, immaculate white Rolls-Royce.
Roberto stepped inside, settled into the plush leather seat, and picked up his glass of sparkling water.
