Chapter 1 - The Paperwork of VengeanceThe courtroom air turned frigid as Michael Reed stepped forward, placing a heavy, leather-bound briefcase onto the wooden podium. The lock snapped open, a sharp metallic click echoing in the absolute silence of the room.

Jason’s hands began to tremble subtly against the mahogany railing. His attorney, a high-priced litigator named Donald Vance, scrambled up from his leather chair, trying to recover his footing.
"Your Honor! This is an outrageous ambush! Opposing counsel is attempting to turn a civil asset-division hearing into a public circus based on unverified photos and staged dramatics!" Vance barked, his voice straining.
Judge Harold Vance—no relation to the attorney—glared over his half-moon spectacles. "Sit down, Mr. Vance. You will have your turn to speak. Right now, I want to hear what Mrs. Carter’s counsel is putting on the record."
Michael turned toward the gallery, where reporters were practically hanging off their seats, cameras flashing in erratic bursts.
"Your Honor, what my client just revealed is only the surface of a ten-year nightmare," Michael said, his voice ringing with absolute authority. "For a decade, Jason Carter maintained an illusion of success. He led the public, his investors, and his board of directors to believe he was a self-made titan of Texas real estate. But the truth is much darker."
Michael pulled out the first file, marked with a bright red "CONFIDENTIAL" stamp.
"Exhibits A through D," Michael declared, handing copies to the bailiff to pass to the judge. "Detailed medical evaluations signed by top forensic pathologists from Houston. These cover seven distinct hospital admissions over eight years, logged under pseudonyms to protect Mrs. Carter’s life while she gathered evidence. These documents outline fractures, chemical burns, and blunt-force trauma—all coinciding with dates Mr. Carter claimed he was out of town on business trips."
Nicole’s fake, sympathetic mask completely shattered. She pulled her hand away from Jason’s arm as if he were on fire. "Jason... what is this? You told me she was crazy! You said she had an accident!"
"Shut up, Nicole!" Jason hissed under his breath, his forehead glistening with sudden sweat. "It’s a bluff! She’s faking it!"
"Is the offshore bank account in the Cayman Islands a bluff as well, Mr. Carter?" Michael interjected smoothly, pulling a thick stack of financial ledgers from the briefcase.
The gallery erupted into whispers.
"Seven days ago," Michael continued, "Mr. Carter drained four joint family accounts totaling $42 million. He transferred those funds through three shell companies—registered under the name of Ms. Nicole Harper."
Nicole gasped, stumbling backward into her seat. "What?! My name?!"
"Yes, Ms. Harper," Michael said, turning his gaze toward her. "You signed shell company papers three weeks ago thinking you were becoming a shareholder in Carter Enterprises. In reality, Jason Carter was setting you up as the financial fall guy for illegal asset hiding, tax evasion, and money laundering."
Jason’s face drained of all color. The room span around him. His grand entrance with his mistress on his arm was supposed to be his final victory lap. Instead, he had walked directly into a meticulously engineered trap.
Judge Harold slammed his gavel down, the sharp CRACK instantly silencing the room.
"Mr. Carter, your personal assets are frozen immediately pending a full federal audit," the Judge ordered, his tone icy. "Furthermore, given the severity of the evidence regarding physical abuse and financial fraud, this court orders an immediate criminal hold. Bailiffs, secure the doors."

Jason looked back in horror as two armed bailiffs stepped in front of the court exits. He looked at Iris, searching her face for a trace of the meek, submissive woman he had abused for ten years.
She offered him only a cold, calm smile.
