Chapter 4 - Secrets in the ShadowsThe rain poured heavily over the Texas Hill Country as two black SUVs navigated the winding, dark roads leading to the isolated Fredericksburg property.

Iris sat in the back of the lead vehicle, flanked by Michael and two private security operatives she had hired for protection.
The estate loomed out of the darkness—a massive, ultra-modern stone fortress hidden deep within hundreds of acres of dense oak trees. There were no lights on inside.
"The federal marshals haven't seized this property yet," Michael noted, checking his tablet. "It wasn't listed on any of Jason’s corporate disclosures. He bought it through a third-party trust three years ago."
"Because it wasn't meant for business," Iris said, staring at the darkened building. "It was his sanctuary."
Using the keycodes Nicole had provided, the security team disarmed the perimeter alarms and unlocked the heavy iron front door. The interior was modern, cold, and minimalist—smelling faintly of expensive cigar smoke and old paper.
They made their way down to the basement, descending a spiral staircase that opened into a vast wine cellar lined with hundreds of vintage bottles.
Iris walked directly to the back wall, running her hands along the cold stone panels until she felt a slight indentation. She pressed it, and a heavy stone section swung inward with a mechanical hum, revealing a reinforced steel safe built directly into the bedrock.
"The combination," Iris murmured, recalling what Nicole had said. She dialed in the date Jason founded Carter Enterprises: 0-9-1-5-1-6.
A deep beep echoed, and the thick steel handle turned.
The safe door swung open.
Inside were not stacks of cash or gold bars. Instead, there were three black hard drives labeled with yellow tape, alongside several thick black notebooks filled with hand-written entries.
Michael reached in and picked up one of the black notebooks, flipping through the pages under the light of his flashlight. His face grew increasingly pale with every line he read.
"My God, Iris..." Michael breathed, his voice unsteady. "This isn't just about financial fraud."
"What is it?" Iris asked, taking one of the hard drives.
"Jason wasn't just hiding money," Michael said, pointing to names, dates, and bank account numbers written in the journal. "He was running a massive, illegal extortion ring. He pulled blackmail leverage on high-ranking state officials, judges, real estate regulators, and rival CEOs. He used this property to record private meetings, gathering wiretaps and hidden camera footage to force approvals on his massive land-grab projects."
Iris gasped as she realized the full scope of Jason's power. "That’s why he was so confident in court today... he believed no judge or politician would ever allow him to be convicted because he owned them all."
Suddenly, the faint sound of footsteps echoed from the top of the basement stairs.

The heavy iron door at the top of the stairwell slammed shut with a booming crash.
The lights in the wine cellar instantly cut out, plunging them into total darkness.
