CHAPTER 1

The Thing That Was Never Meant to Leave

The scream shattered the cabin long before the thunder did.

"STOP—DON'T TOUCH IT!"

Elias fought against the wooden chair until the ropes dug into his wrists. His entire body convulsed as sweat poured from every inch of his skin.

Old Martha had seen fevers.
She had seen madness.
She had buried children possessed by grief.

But she had never seen anyone bleed black tears.

The villagers crowded outside the tiny cabin, too terrified to enter.

For three nights Elias had heard voices.

Not voices from outside.

Voices inside his head.

Every hour they grew louder.

Every hour another person in the village disappeared.

Nobody knew why.

Until Martha looked inside his ear.

At first she thought it was hardened blood.

Then she realized...

...it blinked.

Something deep inside his ear moved like a living eye.

She reached for the longest iron tweezers she owned.

"You have to trust me."

Elias cried.

"No... if you pull it out... it'll wake up."

Nobody understood what he meant.

The tweezers slid deeper.

Metal scraped against something soft.

Something alive.

Then—

Resistance.

The creature refused to let go.

It clung to something inside his skull.

Martha pulled harder.

The lantern shook.

The room filled with a strange humming sound.

Every dog in the village began howling at exactly the same moment.

Outside...

Every bird suddenly flew away.

Then came the snap.

The creature tore free.

Thin.

Black.

Longer than anyone expected.

It twisted between the tweezers like liquid shadow.

Then it whispered.

"...Don't..."

The lantern exploded.

Darkness swallowed everything.

When light returned seconds later...

Elias stood on his own.

No ropes.

No panic.

Only silence.

He slowly smiled.

"I can hear them now."

His voice wasn't his anymore.

"They've all been waiting beneath us."

Outside...

Every church bell in the village began ringing by itself.

No one had touched them.

And beneath the wooden floor...

May you like

Something knocked back.
