CHAPTER 2

The Voices Beneath the Earth
Nobody slept that night.
The knocking never stopped.
One knock.
Pause.
Three knocks.
Pause.
Then dozens together.
As if hundreds of hands were buried beneath the village.
The priest declared it evil.
The sheriff blamed hysteria.
Only Martha understood the truth.
The thing she removed...
...wasn't invading Elias.
It had been imprisoning something else.
Old journals hidden beneath the church revealed a forgotten story.
Over one hundred years earlier...
Every child in the village had suddenly begun hearing whispers underground.
One by one they walked into the forest.
None returned.
A traveling healer discovered tiny black parasites living inside the victims.
Instead of destroying them...
she trapped them inside human hosts.
The parasites acted like seals.
Living locks.
Keeping something ancient asleep beneath the earth.
Generation after generation...
the infected unknowingly protected everyone else.
Until Martha pulled one free.
She hadn't cured Elias.
She had broken the seal.
That evening strange cracks spread across every road.
Livestock vanished.
Wells filled with black water.
Then people began smiling for no reason.
Standing perfectly still.
Listening.
Children pointed toward the ground.
"They're singing."
Adults heard nothing.
By sunrise...
half the village had disappeared.
Only muddy footprints led toward the abandoned mine outside town.
Martha, Elias, and the remaining survivors followed.
Deep underground they found hundreds of shoes.
Empty clothes.
Broken lanterns.
But no bodies.
Only a massive stone door.
Covered with handprints.
Still warm.
Then the whispers came again.
Not from behind the door.
From inside every survivor's head.
The stone door slowly opened...
May you like
...from the inside.
