Chapter 5 - THE UNDERWORLD CLOSES INWhile an uneasy, fragile truce settled over the east wing of Mercer House, the rest of Chicago was boiling over.

News of Damian’s desperate promise had leaked to the press, setting off a firestorm across the city's criminal syndicates, corrupt political circles, and corporate elites. To the underworld, Damian Mercer was a king—and whoever married his son would hold an indirect claim to the most powerful empire in the Midwest.

In a smoke-filled backroom of a South Side social club, Ray Maddox—Elena’s brutal ex-husband and a low-level enforcer for the city’s rival syndicate—slapped a newspaper down on a poker table.

“Look at this bullshit,” Ray snarled, blowing smoke rings toward the ceiling. “Damian Mercer is offering half his fortune and his name to whoever gets that mute kid to talk. And my runaway ex-wife just landed a live-in job inside Mercer House.”

The table went quiet. A scarred mob lieutenant named Vinnie "The Hook" Rossi leaned forward, his eyes gleaming with malicious intent.

“Elena Hart? The woman you’ve been shaking down for your gambling debts?” Rossi asked.

“The very same,” Ray grinned nastily. “She used to work in pediatric speech trauma before her kid kicked the bucket. If anyone has the clinical background to crack an autistic, traumatized kid, it’s her.”

“And if she gets inside that fortress and makes the boy talk,” Rossi whispered, “she inherits half of Mercer’s empire. Which means we inherit it through you, Ray.”

“And if she fails?” Ray laughed darkly. “Well, Mercer throws people out on their ear every day. Either way, we win. But we need to make sure she knows who holds her leash before she makes her move.”

Back at Mercer House, Elena was completely unaware of the trap closing around her outside the gates. Her focus was entirely on the small, silent boy sitting across from her on the library floor.

Night after night, the ritual continued. No words were spoken. Just drawing, shared silence, and the slow, agonizing rebuilding of trust.

One evening, as Elena sketched a small house with a glowing window, Noah reached out. His small, cold fingers brushed against her wrist.

It was the first time in eight months he had initiated physical contact with anyone outside his medical team.

From the top of the stairs, Damian watched, his fingers gripping the polished oak banister so hard the wood splintered beneath his grip.
