Chapter 6 - THE CRACK IN THE ICEFourteen days into Elena’s employment, the fragile peace of Mercer House was violently shattered.

It was 03:15 on a rainy Tuesday morning when the perimeter alarms blared across the estate. Red emergency strobe lights flashed against the high stone walls. Heavy gunshots echoed from the outer gates.
In his third-floor study, Damian Mercer moved with terrifying speed. He yanked a customized tactical rifle from a hidden wall compartment, his face carved into an expression of cold, merciless fury.
“Vincent! Status!” Damian barked into his comm-link as he sprinted down the corridor.
“We’ve got a breach at the south gate, Boss,” Vincent’s voice crackled over the radio, punctuated by the sharp pop of automatic gunfire. “A crew of mercenaries backed by South Side muscle. They’re trying to force their way in. They’re looking for the maid—they know she’s inside.”
Damian froze mid-stride. They’re looking for Elena.
In the east wing, the sudden violence tore through the silence. Noah bolted upright from his sleep, letting out a piercing, terrified shriek—the first vocal sound he had made in eight months, not a word, but a primal scream of pure, unadulterated terror.
He curled into a ball on the floor, shaking violently as the sound of distant explosions reverberated through the mansion.
Elena rushed out of her room just as glass shattered down the hall. A heavy oak door at the end of the gallery splintered open, and two armed intruders—sent by Ray Maddox—pushed their way past the unconscious security detail.
“There she is!” one of them shouted, raising a silenced pistol. “Grab her before Mercer’s guards regroup!”
Elena didn't hesitate. She threw herself toward the east nursery, scooping a terrified, sobbing Noah into her arms and shielding his small body with her own.
Before the intruder could pull the trigger, the hallway exploded into motion.
Damian Mercer rounded the corner like an avenging angel.
In a blur of lethal precision, Damian didn't bother to negotiate. Two deafening shots rang out in quick succession. Both intruders dropped instantly, neutralized before they could even aim their weapons.
Damian stood over them in the dim hallway, smoke curling from the barrel of his rifle, his chest heaving. His eyes darted frantically toward the nursery.

He saw Elena huddled on the floor, holding his weeping son tightly against her chest, her own body bruised and bleeding from shrapnel.
Damian dropped his weapon, crossed the floor in two strides, and fell to his knees beside them.
