Chapter 7 - THE UNBROKEN VOWThe smoke cleared from the east wing within minutes, and Mercer House’s security team secured the perimeter, hauling away the remaining infiltrators with ruthless efficiency.

In the private medical suite, Dr. Harrison carefully bandaged a minor shrapnel wound on Elena’s shoulder while casting nervous glances toward Damian, who stood like a statue in the corner of the room, his eyes locked on his son.

Noah was curled on the medical cot, still trembling, but his small hand was gripping the hem of Elena’s sleeve so tightly it would take a knife to cut it loose.

Damian stepped forward, his massive frame casting a long shadow across the bed. His voice, usually a weapon of intimidation, was remarkably soft—almost fragile.

“Are you alright?” he asked Elena.

“I’m fine,” she whispered, her voice shaking slightly from the adrenaline crash. “Check on your son. The gunfire triggered his trauma response.”

Damian knelt beside the cot. For eight months, every time he had approached Noah, the boy had recoiled into icy silence. But this time, Damian didn't reach for him with authority. He placed his large, calloused hands flat on the mattress, palms up, exposing himself entirely.

“I’m right here, buddy,” Damian murmured, a thick knot forming in his throat. “Nobody is going to hurt you. Daddy’s here.”

Noah slowly lifted his head from the pillow. His wide, tear-filled eyes looked from Damian’s scarred, fierce face over to Elena’s bruised arm, and back again.

The room grew so quiet that the steady beep-beep-beep of the heart monitor sounded like falling hammers.

Noah opened his mouth. His lips trembled. The entire underworld, the four million dollars in doctors, the elite politicians, and the armed mercenaries all faded away into nothingness.

“...Daddy?”

The single word fell into the silence like a drop of crystal water on dry earth.

Damian Mercer—the most feared man in Chicago, a man who had slaughtered enemies without blinking—gasped. A single tear broke free from his eye, cutting a clean path down his hardened cheek. He reached out and gently pulled both Noah and Elena into his arms, burying his face in their shoulders as he broke down completely.
