Chapter 5 - Blood and Betrayal in the Fog"Get in the truck!" Adrian shouted, grabbing Evelyn by the wrist and shoving her into the passenger seat beside little Lily.

"Daddy, what's happening?" the little girl whimpered, clutching a stuffed rabbit to her chest.

"Hold on tight, sweetheart," Adrian muttered, slamming the gearshift into drive and punching the gas pedal. The old truck fishtailed on the gravel, spraying mud as it launched forward just as a hail of silenced gunfire shattered the rear window of the cab. Glass exploded inward, raining sparkling shards over Evelyn’s lap.

Adrian maneuvered the truck down a steep, narrow logging trail that wound precariously along the rocky cliffs overlooking the churning Atlantic. Behind them, the black SUVs aggressively pursued, their tires spitting gravel as they closed the distance.

"They tracked our fuel cards," Adrian cursed, gripping the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles turned bone-white. "I thought we had at least another month before they sniffed us out."

"Who sent them?" Evelyn asked, holding Lily tightly against her chest to shield her from the flying debris. "Donald?"

"Donald died six months ago," Adrian shouted over the screaming engine. "A power struggle. Uncle Victor took over the syndicate. And Victor doesn't believe in loose ends. He found out I have a daughter—an heir. And he wants to wipe the Vale bloodline clean so he can rule unopposed."

The truck hit a massive rut, launching them into the air before slamming back down with a sickening metal crunch. The engine sputtered, coughing black smoke from under the hood. A bullet had pierced the radiator.

"We're losing coolant!" Adrian yelled.

Ahead of them, the logging trail ended abruptly at an old, abandoned lighthouse perched on a jagged cliff over the roaring ocean. There was nowhere else to run. It was a dead end.

Adrian spun the wheel, sliding the truck to a halt right against the base of the lighthouse tower. He killed the headlights, plunging them into sudden, eerie darkness broken only by the flashes of lightning overhead.

"Listen to me," Adrian said, turning to Evelyn with absolute, terrifying urgency in his eyes. He grabbed a heavy canvas duffel bag from behind the seat—packed with cash, passports, and a heavy-duty firearm—and thrust it into Evelyn’s arms. "Take Lily. There’s a hidden sea cave down the cliff stairs behind the lighthouse. A boat is moored at the bottom. Take it and go."

"And you?" Evelyn demanded, her voice cracking. "What about you?"

Adrian pressed his forehead against hers for one brief, desperate second, inhaling her scent as if trying to memorize it for eternity. "I have to finish a war I started three years ago. I love you, Evelyn. I never stopped loving you for a single second."

Before she could protest, he shoved her out of the truck door into the pouring rain and locked it from the outside.
