Chapter 1 - The Shattered GlassThe crunch of gravel under Daniel Mercer’s polished oxfords sounded like a death knell in the oppressive quiet of the family courtyard.

Margaret took an involuntary step back, her pearl necklace clutched in a white-knuckled grip. Her mouth opened and closed like a stranded fish. Ethan stood frozen, the color draining from his face until his skin matched the gray stone of the terrace. He looked from his mother, Margaret, to his sister, Vanessa, and finally back to me.

"Elena," Ethan whispered, his voice cracking slightly as panic flickered in his eyes. "What... what is this? Who is this man? What kind of game are you playing?"

I didn't blink. I didn't let the smile leave my face—that cold, serene smile that terrified them more than any screaming match ever could.

"This isn't a game, Ethan," I said, my voice cutting through the heavy afternoon air with surgical precision. "This is the consequence of your choices. You wanted silence while your family tore your son apart. You wanted peace while your mother and sister labeled a traumatized nine-year-old boy an embarrassment. Well, congratulations. You are about to have all the peace, and none of the family."

Daniel Mercer stopped at the foot of the stone steps. He was a man built like a monolith—tall, immaculately suited, with silver-streaked hair and eyes as cold and calculating as a winter storm. He carried a sleek leather briefcase that looked like it held a guillotine inside.

"Mrs. Sterling," Daniel said, his deep baritone carrying effortlessly across the courtyard. He nodded respectfully toward me, completely ignoring Margaret, Vanessa, and Ethan. "Are we ready to proceed?"

"Proceed with what?" Vanessa shrieked, finding her voice as indignation surged through her panic. She stepped forward, pointing a manicured finger at Daniel. "Who do you think you are, marching onto private property? Ethan, tell this clown to get off the grounds before I call security!"

Ethan didn't move. He couldn't. His eyes were locked on the golden lapel pin on Daniel Mercer’s suit jacket—the insignia of the most ruthless, undefeated matrimonial and corporate litigator in the tristate area. Retainer fees for Mercer started at half a million dollars just for a consultation.

"Security?" Daniel smiled, a terrifying, humorless stretching of his lips. He reached into his briefcase and pulled out a thick, black-bound folder. "Mrs. Sterling, your sister-in-law is asking about security. Shall we inform her that the estate security systems, the primary residential deeds, and the corporate operating licenses for Sterling Holdings were transferred into your sole custodial trust thirty minutes ago?"

Margaret gasped, clutching her chest. "What? That’s impossible! Ethan owns Sterling Holdings! Ethan is the CEO!"

"Ethan was the CEO," I corrected softly, stepping down from the porch to stand beside Daniel. I reached out and gently touched the smooth leather of the briefcase. "Ethan was a lot of things. A provider. A husband. A father, supposedly. But mostly, he was a man who forgot whose blood, sweat, and family inheritance actually built this empire."
