Chapter 12 - The Ghost from the PastTwo days later, the high-security perimeter of our private estate was breached.

It was 3:00 AM. The rain poured heavily outside, masking the sound of muffled footsteps on the balcony outside our master bedroom. I woke up instantly, my instincts honed by months of threat-awareness training.

The bed beside me was empty.

"Lorenzo?" I whispered into the darkness.

Before I could sit up, the bedroom door clicked open. Lorenzo stepped inside, soaked to the skin, his knuckles bruised and stained with fresh blood. Behind him, two private security guards dragged a struggling, masked figure across the hardwood floor.

"Stay in bed, Elena," Lorenzo said, his voice dangerously low.

He walked over to the intruder, ripped the black ski mask off, and forced the man's head up by his hair. The face revealed beneath was pale, scarred, and completely unfamiliar—except for a distinct tattoo burned into the left side of his neck: an ouroboros biting its own tail.

"Who sent you?" Lorenzo demanded, pressing the barrel of a sleek, suppressed pistol against the intruder's temple.

The captive laughed, coughing up a spatter of blood onto the pristine floorboards. "You think... you think arresting Richard stopped the bleeding, Moretti? The Consortium owns half the judiciary and all the shipping lanes. Your new wife... she humiliated our top asset. And blood demands blood."

Lorenzo didn't hesitate. He pulled the trigger—not into the man's head, but grazing the wall right beside his ear, shattering the wood. The deafening crack echoed through the room.

"Tell your masters that if they ever step foot on my property again, I won't just kill their soldiers," Lorenzo whispered, his voice sounding like ice grinding over steel. "I will dismantle their entire global network brick by brick, starting with their Swiss bank accounts."

The intruder went rigid, finally realizing the terrifying reality of the man he had been sent to assassinate.

As the guards hauled the prisoner away into the basement interrogation cells, Lorenzo walked back to the bed, his hands still trembling slightly—not from fear, but from the realization of how close they had come to hurting me. He sat down on the edge of the mattress, burying his face in his hands.

I slid across the sheets, wrapping my arms around his broad shoulders, pulling him into my embrace.

"We fight them together," I murmured against his ear. "Just like we fought the board."

Lorenzo looked up, his dark eyes softening as he pulled me into a fierce, desperate kiss. "They picked the wrong family to mess with."
