Chapter 5 - Entering the Lion's DenMonday morning arrived with the relentless gray drizzle typical of the city's financial district. I stood before the towering monolith of glass and steel that was Moretti Holdings, clutching my modest canvas handbag as if it were a shield.

Stepping through the revolving glass doors felt like walking onto another planet. The lobby was vast, silent, and gleaming with polished white marble and minimalist art installations. Security guards in sleek black suits nodded respectfully as I approached the front desk, having already been briefed on my arrival by the CEO’s office.
"Ms. Vance?" a sharp, impeccably dressed woman with steel-gray hair and wire-rimmed glasses intercepted me before I reached the elevators. "I'm Eleanor Vance—no relation, thankfully—Mr. Moretti’s Chief of Staff. Follow me."
I hurried to keep up with her brisk, purposeful stride. As we rode the private elevator up to the sixtieth floor, Eleanor didn't waste any time with pleasantries.
"Mr. Moretti doesn't make impulsive decisions," Eleanor said, her eyes fixed on the digital floor numbers climbing rapidly past fifty. "When he brought you in, he placed a massive target on your back. The old guard of Moretti Holdings—men like Chief Financial Officer Richard Vance, who happens to be my estranged cousin—are not going to welcome a waitress into the executive suite. They think you're a PR stunt. Prove them wrong immediately."
The elevator dinged, and the doors slid open to reveal a sprawling, sunlit penthouse office overlooking the entire city skyline.
At the center of a massive mahogany desk sat Lorenzo Moretti, reviewing a stack of financial portfolios. When he heard our footsteps, he looked up, setting his pen down.
"Welcome, Elena," Lorenzo said, standing up. "Eleanor, has she been briefed on the Sterling acquisition fallout?"
"I was just getting to it, sir," Eleanor replied smoothly.
"Good," Lorenzo said, walking around the desk and stopping a few feet away from me. "Elena, your first assignment isn't paperwork. It's an initiation. Tonight, there is a board dinner at the Azure Club. Richard Vance and his faction are going to try to test you, humiliate you, and force you to resign before the week is out. Are you ready to fight back?"

I looked out the floor-to-ceiling window at the sprawling metropolis below. Just a week ago, I was scrubbing tables and apologizing to abusive customers. Now, I was standing in the inner sanctum of the city's most powerful man, facing a corporate war.
"I'm ready," I said, my voice steady and resolute.
