Chapter 2 - THE MIDNIGHT SUMMONSDeep in the sprawling underground levels beneath Mercer House, far away from the polished marble and crystal chandeliers, lay Julian’s true domain.

The security operations room hummed with the glow of twenty high-definition monitors tracking every inch of the estate, the Chicago freight yards, and the docks. Standing before the main console was Marcus Vance, Julian’s ruthless second-in-command and head of security.

Marcus was staring at a tablet with a frown that carved deep trenches into his scarred face.

"Boss," Marcus said as Julian stepped out of the private elevator, shucking his suit jacket over a leather chair. "You just kicked a hornet's nest. Arthur Whitmore is already on his private satellite phone. He’s calling an emergency board meeting of the port authority. He’s freezing our shipping routes out of Indiana by dawn."

Julian poured himself two fingers of neat bourbon, swirling the amber liquid slowly. "Let him try. The port authority answers to the city council, and three of those councilmen owe their freedom to federal tax evasion cases currently sitting in my safe."

"That’s not all," Marcus warned, swiping the tablet screen. "Word is already leaking to the Chicago Tribune. Vanessa is spinning a story to the gossip columns. She’s claiming you’ve lost your mind, that you’re harboring radical elements, and—worst of all—she’s digging into Claire Dawson’s background. She knows about the dead husband. She knows about the South Chicago apartment."

Julian’s eyes narrowed. The amber liquid in his glass rippled as his grip tightened on the crystal. "If anyone touches that woman or her child, dismantle them. Quietly. Permanently."

"Understood," Marcus nodded. Then, hesitation flickered across his rugged face. "Boss... why did you do it? I’ve seen you look the other way when politicians stole millions. I’ve seen you burn down warehouses to send a message. But a slap? Over a maid?"

Julian walked over to the massive security monitor showing a live feed of the second-floor private suite.

On the screen, in the center of a massive, velvet-draped guest bedroom, Claire sat on the edge of the mattress. A local physician was applying an ice pack to her cheek. Standing nearby, fast asleep in a plush oversized armchair with Mr. Buttons clutched in her tiny fist, was Emma.

Julian’s expression softened in a way Marcus had never witnessed in twelve years of loyal service.

"When she asked me if I was all right," Julian murmured, his voice barely audible over the hum of the servers, "she wasn't looking at the money, the power, or the title. She looked at a monster and saw a person."

Marcus fell silent. He understood the language of blood and power, but looking at the screen, he realized something terrifying: the cold, unfeeling machine that ran the Chicago underworld had just found a heartbeat—and someone had already put a target on its back.
