Chapter 3 - THE WHISPER IN THE WAREHOUSEThree days had passed since the catastrophic dinner party, and the shockwaves were reverberating through every criminal syndicate and corporate boardroom in the Midwest.

At Dock 14 of the South Chicago freight terminal, the air smelled of wet rust, diesel exhaust, and rotting lake fish. Arthur Whitmore, Vanessa’s father, paced the length of the loading dock like a caged predator. His tailored cashmere overcoat was damp from the lake mist, but he didn't care. His face was mottled with fury.

Standing before him were three men wearing heavy dockworker jackets—enforcers belonging to the O'Malley crew, a rival faction that had been trying to muscle in on Julian Mercer’s shipping monopoly for years.

"I don't care how you do it," Arthur spat, stabbing a finger toward the ground. "I want Mercer brought to his knees. Hit his primary warehouse on Cicero Avenue. Burn the manifests. Let the federal investigators find every smuggled crate of electronics we pinned on him. And as for that little housekeeper and her brat... make sure they disappear before the end of the week. Break Mercer’s spirit, and the port is mine."

The lead enforcer, a hulking brute with a broken nose named Sal, grinned nastily, revealing a gold tooth. "Consider it done, Mr. Whitmore. Accidents happen all the time on the docks. A loose crate, a sudden fire... nobody investigates too hard in South Chicago."

Unbeknownst to them, high above the loading dock, tucked away in the shadows of a crane operator’s booth, a pair of binoculars clicked shut.

Marcus Vance lowered the binoculars, a lethal smile playing across his lips. He pressed a small comms button on his collar.

"Boss," Marcus whispered into the receiver. "The fish are biting. Arthur Whitmore just ordered a hit on the Cicero warehouse and, worse... he’s targeting Claire and the little girl."

A cold, dead silence hung on the other end of the line before Julian’s voice came back. It wasn't angry. It was far worse. It was the voice of a man preparing an execution.

"Burn them to the ground, Marcus. Every last one of them."
