Chapter 9 - SUNRISE AT MERCER HOUSETwo weeks later, Mercer House looked entirely different.

The oppressive, sterile silence that had haunted the limestone mansion for twelve years was gone, replaced by the soft sound of children's laughter, the patter of small sneakers across hardwood floors, and the smell of fresh cinnamon pastries drifting from the main kitchen.

In the sunroom overlooking the lake, Claire Dawson was pouring tea from a silver pot.

Running across the manicured lawn outside, chasing a golden retriever puppy that Julian had mysteriously acquired, was Emma. Her red knit hat had slipped off her curls, flying through the air as she giggled with unbridled joy.

Julian stood by the French doors, watching them with his hands tucked into his trouser pockets. The haunting shadows beneath his eyes seemed to have faded, replaced by a quiet, grounded peace he hadn't known in over a decade.

Claire walked up beside him, handing him a cup of black coffee.

"She loves the puppy," Claire said softly, a gentle smile playing on her lips.

"She deserves a yard to run in," Julian replied, taking the cup. He turned his dark eyes toward Claire. "And her mother deserves to stop working twenty hours a day just to survive."

Claire’s smile faltered slightly, her gaze dropping to her teacup. "Julian... I’m a housekeeper. I have a job to do here. You’ve already given us protection, a safe place to stay, and..." She gestured vaguely toward the sprawling estate. "This."

"You are not a housekeeper anymore, Claire," Julian said quietly, reaching out to gently touch her hand.

Claire looked up, her breath catching in her throat as she met his steady, burning gaze.

"The third-floor nursery," Julian continued, his voice thick with emotion, "is no longer a shrine to ghosts. Yesterday... I opened the doors, took down the silk covers, and let the sunlight in. But a house like this is too big for just a little girl and a lonely man."

He stepped closer, closing the distance between them until Claire could feel the warmth radiating from his chest.

"Stay," Julian whispered, lifting his hand to gently brush a stray lock of hair behind her ear. "Not as an employee. As the heart of this house. Let us build a real home together."

Emma’s voice suddenly drifted in through the open French doors, shouting happily as she chased the puppy across the lawn.

Claire looked into Julian’s eyes—eyes that had once terrified a city, but now held nothing left for her except absolute devotion.

She smiled, tears of relief shining in her eyes, and placed her hand over his.

"I thought you’d never ask, Mr. Mercer."
