Chapter 2 - Crimson Ties and Broken Pledges

The penthouse of the Kane Estate sat forty stories above the city, a fortress of black glass and polished steel.

Harper woke up to the smell of antiseptic and expensive cologne. She tried to move her right hand, but it was bound tightly in a custom splint. A soft, warm weight lay across her chest—a cashmere blanket.

"Don't move," a voice said from the shadows.

Dominic sat in a leather armchair by the floor-to-ceiling window, a glass of amber liquid in his hand. The city lights flickered behind him like a sea of fallen stars.

"The doctor set your fingers," Dominic said, standing up and walking to her bedside. "Two fractures. The cut on your cheek took six stitches. You lost a lot of blood, but you're going to live."

Harper swallowed, her throat dry. "Why did you help me, Mr. Kane? We... we aren't friends. My father said you were a monster."

Dominic placed his glass on the nightstand and sat on the edge of her bed. He reached out, his thumb gently tracing the bandage on her cheek.

"Your father is a parasite who feeds on those weaker than him," Dominic said. "And as for why I helped you... you don't remember, do you?"

Harper frowned, wincing as the movement pulled at her stitches. "Remember what?"

Dominic pulled a small, tarnished silver key from his pocket and placed it on her bedside table.

Harper’s breath hitched. "That... that was my mother’s. She gave it to me before she died. I thought I lost it years ago."

"You didn't lose it. You gave it to me," Dominic said, his eyes darkening with a memory. "Ten years ago. In the rain outside the pediatric wing of St. Jude's. You were sixteen, hiding from your father’s men. I was twenty, running from my own. We hid in the same boiler room for three hours."

The memory hit Harper like a physical blow. The cold, the smell of rust, and the quiet, intense boy who had shared his coat with her and promised her that one day, he would build a fortress where no one could ever hurt her again.

"You," Harper whispered. "The boy with the gray eyes."

"I kept my promise, Harper," Dominic said softly. "But your father broke his. He was supposed to stay away from you. That was the agreement we made five years ago when I took over the family. I gave him the shipping lanes in exchange for your freedom. He broke the treaty tonight."

Harper’s heart hammered against her ribs. "He tried to force me to sign over my mother's trust. If I signed it, he was going to commit me to an asylum in Switzerland. I would have disappeared."

Dominic’s jaw clenched, a muscle leaping under his skin. "He won't get the chance. My men are already dismantling his assets. By tomorrow morning, the Langford name will be worthless."

Suddenly, the doors to the bedroom burst open.

Victor, Dominic’s second-in-command, stood in the doorway, his face pale. "Dominic, we have a problem. Grayson Langford just released a video statement."

Dominic turned, his eyes narrowing. "Explain."

Victor held up a phone. "He’s claiming you kidnapped Harper. He has the police commissioner on camera confirming a warrant for your arrest. And he’s offering a ten-million-dollar bounty for her 'safe return.' The media is eating it up."

Harper felt the room spin. "He’s going to use the law to drag me back. He’ll kill me this time, Dominic. He has to."

May you like

Dominic stood up, his presence filling the room with an icy, lethal resolve.

"Let him try," Dominic said. "He wants to play a game of shadows? I built the dark."
