Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

By noon the next day, the city was on fire.

The media was plastered with photos of Harper Langford, painted as a fragile heiress held captive by the ruthless mafia boss Dominic Kane. Grayson Langford appeared on every major news channel, his nose heavily bandaged, tears in his eyes as he begged for his daughter’s safe return.

Inside the Kane penthouse, Harper watched the television screen in disgust.

"He’s so good at it," she whispered, her hands shaking. "The grieving father. He’s played that role my entire life."

Dominic entered the room, throwing a thick folder onto her lap. "Then let's change the script."

Harper looked down at the folder. It was filled with old tax documents, shipping manifests, and medical records.

"What is this?" she asked.

"Your father’s empire isn't built on shipping, Harper," Dominic said, pouring himself a cup of black coffee. "It’s built on human cargo. He uses the 'Langford Foundation' to smuggle undocumented girls across the border, placing them in private estates under the guise of domestic work. He keeps their passports, and if they complain, he threatens their families."

Harper felt sick to her stomach. "My mother... she tried to stop him, didn't she? That's why she died."

Dominic nodded slowly. "She found the ledger. She tried to bring it to the police, but the commissioner buried it. Shortly after, she had her 'accident' on the yacht."

Harper gripped the folder tightly, her knuckles turning white. "I want to destroy him, Dominic. Not just stop him. I want to burn his legacy to ash."

"Good," Dominic said, leaning over her, his hands resting on either side of her shoulders on the bed. "Because tonight is the rescheduled charity gala. He’s hosting it at the Metropolitan Museum to prove he isn't intimidated by me. He thinks he’s safe in a room full of federal judges and cameras."

"What are we going to do?" Harper asked.

"We are going to crash his party," Dominic said. "But we aren't going as enemies. We are going as the main event."

Before Harper could reply, Victor entered the room again, looking tense. "Dominic, the perimeter alarm just went off. We have intruders in the lower garage. It’s a hit squad. Langford's men."

Dominic didn't even blink. He reached behind his back, pulled a sleek black semi-automatic pistol, and checked the chamber.

"Stay here," Dominic told Harper. "And lock the door."

"Dominic, wait!" Harper cried out.

He paused at the door, looking back at her. "I survived the streets of this city since I was ten, Harper. A few of your father’s paid thugs aren't going to keep me from getting you your justice."

The door clicked shut, leaving Harper alone in the silent room.

She waited, her heart pounding in her ears. Five minutes passed. Ten.

Suddenly, the lights in the penthouse flickered and died, plunging the room into pitch blackness.

A heavy thud echoed from the hallway outside her door, followed by the sound of dragging footsteps.

"Dominic?" Harper called out, her voice trembling.

The handle of her bedroom door slowly turned.
