Chapter 5 - The Gala of Retribution

The Metropolitan Museum of Art was bathed in blue and gold lights. Hundreds of elite guests, dressed in tuxedos and evening gowns, milled about the central hall, sipping champagne and discussing the "tragedy" of the Langford family.

Grayson Langford stood near the grand staircase, his broken nose covered by a flesh-colored bandage, speaking with the chief of police and several city council members.

"We are doing everything we can," Grayson said, his voice dripping with false sorrow. "My poor Harper... she’s so fragile. I only hope Dominic Kane has some shred of humanity left."

"He doesn't," a voice echoed through the microphone system.

The music stopped. The chatter died instantly.

All eyes turned to the top of the grand staircase.

Harper Langford stood there. She wore a stunning, backless crimson gown that contrasted sharply with the white bandage on her cheek and the splint on her right hand. Her hair was pulled back, exposing her face, bruised but radiating a terrifying, regal calm.

Beside her stood Dominic Kane, looking like death dressed in a black tuxedo.

"Harper!" Grayson gasped, stepping forward, his face turning pale. "My god, you're safe! Officers, arrest him! He’s the one who took her!"

The police officers in the room drew their weapons, pointing them at Dominic.

But Dominic didn't flinch. He reached into his jacket and pulled out a small remote, pressing a button.

The massive projection screens behind the exhibits, meant to show the achievements of the Langford Foundation, flickered. Instead of charity work, they displayed a live feed of the basement of the Kane penthouse.

On the screen, Paige Langford sat tied to a chair, crying and screaming.

"He made us do it!" Paige’s voice boomed through the museum's state-of-the-art sound system. "Father killed Julian Vance! He killed Dominic's mother to start the war! And the foundation... it's a front! We traffic the girls through the port of Greenwich! The police commissioner knows everything! He gets ten percent!"

The crowd gasped. The police officers slowly lowered their weapons, looking at each other in confusion and horror.

"This is a lie!" Grayson screamed, his voice cracking. "It’s a deepfake! A setup!"

"Is it, Grayson?" Harper said, her voice clear and strong as she walked down the stairs, step by step, her red dress trailing behind her. "You broke my hand because I wouldn't sign the papers to lock me away. You killed my mother because she found your ledgers. You spent twenty-six years trying to make me feel small so I would never look at the truth."

She stopped three feet from him.

"But I’m not small anymore," Harper said.

Grayson looked around desperately, but his friends, his allies, the politicians, and the judges were all backing away from him, avoiding his gaze.

"You have nothing," Grayson hissed, his eyes wild. "You're a bastard child of a dead gangster! You think this city will accept you?"

"They don't have to accept me," Harper said, a cold, beautiful smile touching her lips. "They just have to fear me."

Suddenly, the museum doors burst open. Federal agents, led by a prosecutor Dominic had bought months ago, stormed the room.

"Grayson Langford, you are under arrest for human trafficking, racketeering, and conspiracy to commit murder," the lead agent announced.

As they slammed Grayson onto the marble floor and cuffed him, Celeste shrieked in the background, trying to hide her face from the flashing cameras of the reporters who had suddenly turned their lenses on her.

Grayson looked up at Harper, his face pressed against the cold stone. "You... you ruined us."

"No," Harper whispered, looking down at him. "I just let the house tell the truth."
