Chapter 7 - The Final Gambit

Time seemed to slow to a crawl. Carmine’s thumb slid toward the tactical holster concealed inside the lining of his custom Tom Ford jacket. He thought he held all the cards. He thought he had outsmarted the great Mateo Vance at every single turn.

He forgot one crucial detail.

“You always did have an ego problem, Carmine,” I said, my voice unnervingly calm.

Carmine paused, his hand freezing inches from his weapon. “What did you say?”

“You spent twelve years managing my security, routing my wires, and cleaning up my messes,” I continued, taking a slow step forward. “Did you really think I wouldn't install a secondary master override on every terminal in this estate?”

Carmine’s smirk flickered, a tiny flash of uncertainty crossing his face. “You don't have terminal access. I locked you out three weeks ago.”

“You locked out my terminal,” I corrected, pulling a small, encrypted thumb drive from the lining of my tuxedo vest and holding it up for him to see. “This is the cold-storage backup drive containing the master ledgers of every single offshore account, encrypted directly under my father’s original biometric signature—a signature that automatically broadcasts to an independent federal server in Zurich the moment it’s disconnected.”

Carmine’s face drained of color. The smooth, untouchable corporate predator vanished instantly, replaced by a desperate, cornered animal.

“You’re bluffing,” Carmine snarled, lunging forward with his pistol drawn.

Before he could clear leather, Nora fired.

The bullet caught Carmine cleanly in the right shoulder, spinning him off balance and sending his pistol clattering across the polished mahogany floor. He cried out, clutching his bleeding shoulder as he crashed against the glass display case.

“You’re finished, Carmine,” Nora said, stepping over the debris and pressing the cold steel barrel of her revolver directly beneath his chin.

Carmine spat a mouthful of blood onto the floor, glaring up at us with pure, unadulterated venom. “You think the feds care about your sister, housemaid? You think some mid-level prosecutors are going to dismantle a multi-billion-dollar global syndicate because a maid found a ledger? They’ll bury you both in a black-site prison before sunrise!”

“Maybe,” I said, stepping up beside Nora and looking down at the man who had been my brother in arms for a decade. “But we won't be doing it alone.”

Heavy boots slammed against the marble flooring of the grand hallway outside the executive lounge. The shouting voices of federal tactical officers echoed through the open doors, accompanied by the blinding glare of high-intensity breaching lights sweeping across the ceiling.

“FBI! Federal law enforcement! Nobody move!”

The doorway filled instantly with heavily armored tactical agents, their assault rifles raised, their laser sights painting every inch of the room in bright red dots.

Carmine’s eyes widened in sheer, absolute panic. He looked at the federal agents, then back at me, realizing too late that his master plan had just become his own execution chamber.

“Agent in charge!” I called out clearly, keeping my hands visible while holding the encrypted thumb drive in my left hand. “My name is Mateo Vance. I am surrendering this estate and myself into federal custody. And I have a complete, unedited confession of international money laundering and murder to hand over right now.”
