Chapter 8 - The Aftermath

The transition from billionaire philanthropist to federal prisoner was swift, clinical, and utterly dehumanizing. Within twenty minutes, the grand ballroom of my Manhattan estate had been transformed into an active federal crime scene. Wealthy donors and corrupt politicians were being ushered out through the service exits under armed guard, their champagne glasses replaced by digital interrogation logs and federal subpoenas.
As two heavy-set federal agents slapped steel cuffs around my wrists, I watched Carmine being dragged out on a stretcher, his face twisted in silent rage as paramedics clamped a pressure bandage over his bleeding shoulder. He shot me one final, venomous glare before being loaded into an unmarked black SUV waiting by the front steps.
Nora stood near the edge of the police tape, her oversized maid's coat stained with soot and blood, clutching the small iron key to her family’s front door in her raw, bruised hand.
An FBI special agent with sharp gray eyes and a crisp suit approached her, holding a digital tablet.
“Ms. Bennett?” the agent asked formally. “The Director wants a formal statement regarding the shipping manifests you recovered from the sub-level servers. Your testimony will be critical for the federal indictments.”
Nora nodded slowly, casting one final look across the glittering, ruined ballroom where my empire had finally crumbled to dust.

Yet, as the heavy doors of the van slammed shut, locking me in the dark, I felt a strange, unprecedented sense of peace. For the first time in ten years, I wasn't wearing a mask.
